TECO Big Bend Power Plant

The Manatees, also called Sea Cows, come to the channel by the TECO Big Bend power plant in the winter months to enjoy the warm waters. This is the view from the Apollo Beach side. The Manatee Viewing Center is beside the power plant.

Boats For Sighting & Catching

This is a tagging which occured on December 30,2003.

A spotter plane spots the Manatees over Tampa Bay. One of these boats then attempts to net the Manatee.

Marine biologists and others from FWC, SEA WORLD and other agencies then check the manatees health and vital signs. The manatee is checked for scars from encounters with boat propellers.

The tracking device is readied.

The Manatee is equipped with a radio tracking GPS device. Shown held by one of the team members.

The Tracking Device Is Attached To A belt On The Tail Of The Manatee. If The Tracking Device Is Caught It Is Designed To Easily Break Lose So That The Manatee Is Not Harmed.

    Wow, that looks like a lot of fun. We are hoping to be able to help the manatee, and animals in general more this year than we did last. Being able to participate in something like must be incredibly rewarding.

    Great lens! How lucky to have been there to be able to watch the process. The Florida Manatee's are such gentle creatures, and so curious, they are endangered by the propellers of the boats. I can just imagine those running the boats must feel horrible if they know they have hit them. It is good to see them working on conservation for this endangered species! 5* Linda
