Manchester United Football Club
Ranked #12,973 in Sports & Recreation, #312,788 overall
History...
Manchester United FC dates back to 1878 when the Newton Heath LYR Cricket & Football Club was formed.
The club then went bankrupt and changed to Manchester United FC in 1902.
In 1908 United stormed to their first league championship, followed this up by winning the inaugral Charity Shield and then won the FA Cup for the first time in 1909, beating Bristol City 1-0 in the final.
After claiming another league title in 1911, however, the club stopped challenging for honours and spent three spells in the second division before the outbreak of World War II. It was only when football started up again after the war that United began their inexorable journey to become the countries, perhaps the worlds, biggest and best known club.
Much of the credit for the clubs rise to international prominence belongs to Matt Busby who took over as manager of United following the war and remained in control for 24 years. Busby produced a succession of stylish sides which have become a benchmark for subsequent Old Trafford teams, not just in terms of success but in how the game is played.
The Busby Babes
Busby's first trophy as United manager was the 1948 FA Cup which they claimed after a 4-2 win over Blackpool.
In 1953 United won the league championship and the increasing number of home grown youngsters being introduced into the side led to the team being christened "The Busby Babes."
This team became without question the finest side in England, winning successive league titles in 1956 and 57, being denied a probable double on the second occasion when an early injury to their goalkeeper was a massive factor in their 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa.
Busby had complete faith in his young charges and the club looked certain to dominate English football for a decade or more with star players like
Roger Byrne,
Eddie Colman,
Duncan Edwards,
Bobby Charlton and
Tommy Taylor.
Busby, indeed, had his sights set on glory further afield and took his side into Europe to compete in the European Cup.

"The footballing world is reeling from the loss of some of its most talented young players - known as the Busby Babes.
The Best Years
The next trophy Man Utd won after the grief of the Munich disaster tragedy was the F.A Cup in 1963.
The league championship was also captured in 1965 and 1967 as Denis Law and Busby's latest boy wonder George Best combined with Bobby Charlton to carry on the tradition of the Babes.
Still Busby craved European success. In 1968 he fulfilled his last remaining ambition as United beat Benfica 4-1 to become the first English winners of the European Cup.
In 1974 United suffered relegation to the second division but returned to the first division immediately as champions under the bullish leadership of Tommy Docherty.
Under Docherty United reached successive FA Cup finals, losing surprisingly 1-0 to Southampton in 1976 before turning the tables in 1977 with a fine 2-1 win over Liverpool.
The club continued to be a major player in the cup competitions but became increasingly frustrated at lack of success in the league, especially as their major rivals Liverpool were monopolising the first division title during this period.
United won the FA Cup in 1983 and 1985 with victories over Brighton & Hove Albion and Everton but the league continued to prove elusive due to the domination of Liverpool.

The New Era
The Appointment of Sir Alex Ferguson
A new era of success was ushered in by the appointment of the abrasive Scot, Sir Alex Ferguson as manager in 1986. In 1990 Ferguson was generally felt to be on the brink of the sack when the club won through to the FA cup final to beat Crystal Palace in a replay. Neither Ferguson or the club have looked back since that point...

Two Mark Hughes goals gave United a splendid Cup Winners Cup success over Barcelona in 1992 but still the league title refused to come back to Old Trafford.
United missed out on capturing the old Division One trophy for the final time in 1992 after a late surrender allowed Leeds United to take the crown but the newly formed Premier League proved much more to their liking.
Man Utd's love affair with The Premier League
In the 15 years that The Premier League has been running, Man Utd have won it 9 times. They have played 617 games in The Premier League, only to have ever lost 88 games, whilst drawing 137 times and winning on an impressive 392 occasions. Thats a 63.5% win rate, seeing them score a total of 1213 goals, conceding only 535, much less that 1 a game.

Throughout those 15 years, Sir Alex Ferguson has introduced a variety of footballing talents to the Manchester United sqaud. Their domination over the English league was rampant throughout the 1990s, winning 19 major trophies throughout the decade. their competitors, including Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Blackburn and Newcastle, did not flourish quite as ferociously as Man utd. This allowed Utd to build on their success and maximise profit, giving them a valuable financial advantage, making them one of the richest clubs in the world.
The European Stage
The glitz and the glamour really set in at Manchester United in 1999 when they won the treble; The English Premier League Title, The F.A Cup and after 31 years of waiting, the European Cup, or Uefa Champions League was brought home to Old Trafford once again.
Any Man Utd fan will tell you it was a rollercoaster of emotions on the night. Utd were 1-0 down to German Champions Bayern Munich after 89 minutes of The Champions League Final, when a David Beckham corner fell to Ryan Giggs on the edge of the box. Giggs struck it towards goal, with Teddy Sheringham there to help it along the way, it snuck into the bottom corner to put Man Utd level.
The whole of Europe and most of the world were gripped expecting it to go into extra time and another 30 minutes of drama. However, in the final minute of extra time, David Beckham strolled over to the corner flag to take another Man Utd set piece. At this point you could see a glint in Sir Alex Ferguson's eye. Bayern Munich were looking tired and stunned, where as Man Utd were on fire and buzzing. Beckham swang the corner in, Sheringham leaps to meet the corner with the header, it heads towards Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who sticks his toe out and manages to hoof it into the roof of the net.
The Man Utd camp erupted into hysteria. No one could believe what they had juat witnessed. A phenomenal two goals in injury time to comeback and win in the final. The Man Utd squad were instantly heroes in their home nation and the pride of English football.
A momentus treble for Manchester Utd in 1999 saw out the 90s with a bang. Great expectations followed in the new millenium, along with some stiffer competition.
Into the Millenium
Man Utd remained a dominant force in European and domestic competition during the turn of the millenium. Their recent European crown filled the club with confidence, pride and belief that they could be anyone they played against.
During the mid 2000s, the English Premier League top flight became a little more interesting with the boom of Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool.
Chelsea's relatively new Russian owner Roman Abramovic has provided his club with an almost never ending pot of gold. Various managers have had access to the fortune, including Jose Mourinho, but none of them have yet to provide Chelsea with a European Title, or muchly craved domestic domination. Some excellent talents have been introduce to the Premier League in Chelsea's squad, but with so many new faces always around, there never seems to be much cohesion.
Arsenal have been Man Utd main competition throughout the turn of the millenium. With the intelligent Arsene Wenger in the hot seat at Arsenal sinse the early 90s, he has had time to craft an defiant squad of classy footballers. Arsenal have recently moved into the luxury new Emirates Stadium, and are slowly building up their financial clout to become contenders for the top spot in England and infact Europe.
Liverpool have never been as successful as they were in their glory years of the 70s, but always a formidable team to have to play against. Liverpool have always remained in the top flight, but the domestic league title seems to be elusive. Although in recent times, manager Rafa Benitez has brought a run of good European form to Anfield and a fantastic European Champions League Title in 2003 boosted the clubs profile and prosperity. Liverpool always seem to be the club to watch out for and have been bitter rivals of Manchester United's for decades. Any match-up between the two sides is guaranteed fireworks.
Currently this season, Man Utd need one point from their last two games to win the league title. They also face Barcelona in the return leg of The Champions League Semi-Final at Old Trafford next week, on the back of a 0-0 draw at The Nou Camp.
To win those two trophies this season will cement Man Utd's place back at the very top of English and European football.
