How to make a mandala

Spiritual art project - make a mandala

Mandala's are an inspiring spiritual art form. You can get your kids involved with spiritual art in all kinds of ways - from simply coloring preprinted mandala's, to learning how to construct one themselves with a compass.

The picture on the left is part of a Tibetan Buddhist mandala - most people will never get that detailed themselves. This is real art. The design is of 6-fold symmetry, though for a mathematician it's not quite perfect in that sense. Can you see reasons why it's not?

Spiritual art ideas

Mandalas are calming, inspiring and symmetrical. Learning about mandalas will give your kids a sense of the links between cultures and our common humanity. To illustrate this it would be good to have mandalas from various cultures in the house.

Mandalas and math

When your kid gets to middle school age, mandalas can be used to teach them about symmetry. Bilateral (or mirror) symmetry and rotational symmetry. Do make sure to included mandalas with other than 90 degrees rotational symmetry, for instance 120 degrees or 72 (in threes or fives respectively). Some mandala books include mandalas that aren't symmetrical at all - which makes a good trick question: what symmetry is there in this mandala?

Once the basis is understood you can go on to the colored mandalas and get the kids wondering whether those are still symmetrical... Were they colored symmetrically?

Coloring mandalas

Inspiring spiritual art

This is the easiest way to introduce mandalas to your kids. As soon as they can hold a pencil, they can color mandalas. Unless they really enjoy it, I would think this suits kids till the age of 12 or 13. You can use this as a reward for a days good work for instance.

Making mandalas yourself

To enhance the theme of mandalas a bit further, you could teach kids how to make mandalas themselves, out of their own creativity. It's a fun way to learn to use a compass for instance. And because the result will be prettier when the compass is used well, it will stimulate them to work thoroughly.

Getting a quality compass is a good investment.

As an Art History Project

Coloring mandalas can be great fun. But to get kids thinking about it a bit more, give them access to various forms of mandalas and let them think about the symbolism of them, the color use in various traditions and so on.

Watch the videos together and ask questions about them. What is the role of the music? Why are the sand mandalas destroyed afterwards?

Art History Inspiration

I started this lens out with the idea that the theme of mandalas can be used to get cross cultural on your kid. In other words: let them learn about world culture and spirituality. Here are some books that will help your kid explore that topic.
