Create a Mandala Collage

Manifestation for the Creative Entrepreneur

A Creative Process toward Goal-Setting

Traditional formats suggested for business goal setting do not tend to meet needs well for a creative entrepreneur. The linear fashion is so rigid that the process often becomes limiting in reality rather than a launchpad for growth. Traditional linear formats for goat-setting tend to become complex and focus on outer solutions VS the internal issues and passions that scream for expression among right brained creative types (like me... and maybe you, too).

The strategy outlined here is offered as an alternative to goal setting or manifestation for artists. It combines mandalas with collage art to use as a basis or framework for one's personal vision toward success as a creative entrepreneur. This unique project provides a way to unleash creativity while exploring our inner desires and to focus on the future. This strategy is just one of many exercises introduced in the book The Creative Entrepreneur: A DIY Visual Guidebook for Making Business Ideas Real by Lisa Sonora Beam.

WHY Collage & Mandala Art?

Creative minds of all kinds tend to prefer interacting with visual art of some kind over the usual list.

One HUGE plus here is that neither collage nor mandala art require any particular training as an artist, so ALL of us can create this type of art. No two end products will be the same and there are no limiting restrictions that become rigid and complex.

This 'marriage' of collage & mandala provides the artist with a launchpad for the exploration of pattern, imagery, color & composition that leads naturally toward personal insight and a way to design 'a higher vision of self' in a way that cannot be done with writing alone.

Mandala art has been popular for self-expression, personal development and spiritual renewal for thousands of years in various cultures. The word 'mandala' is derived from Sanskrit meaning 'magic circle'. The famous psychologist Carl Jung found that creating mandalas helped his patients to reveal unconscious thoughts. It is easy for creative minds to become fascinated with mandala shapes whether to simply enjoy coloring them or as in this project, to use a mandala shape as a foundation or catalyst for collage art in the theme of goals for me as a creative entrepreneur.

Collage is simply a matter of cutting and pasting various pictures and words within a chosen theme and design. Use pics and lettering cut from magazines and let your imagination do the rest.

The Mandala Collage Project in Motion

Creative entrepreneurs embark on a business success journey as unique as their own individual talents.

Lisa Sonora Beam hosted a workshop for artists interested in this project around the time her book was published. That book The Creative Entrepreneur: A DIY Visual Guidebook for Making Business Ideas Real contains MANY projects toward the success journey of the creative entrepreneur, ones with deliciously creative names I might add...names such as 'Empowered to Flower' and 'Soul Proprietor' ! This page is a focus on just ONE of those projects, the Collage Mandala.

This creative project might be perfect for:
* artists, crafters, and creative minds from all walks of life who want to make a living from their own brand of creative work, whatever that may be
* creative minds who have already achieved some success, but don't know how to replicate it or move to another level of accomplishment
* anyone needing a creative and effective plan that provides motivation, inspiration and FOCUS toward their own unique vision of success

The Four Quadrants of the Mandala

There is a magical synergy in this creative process of working with each of the pathways of your business in a visual manner.

mandalaThe creative business mandala includes four categories or pathways. Each of these are placed on specific parts of the mandala as you create, and the following focus words would appear on opposing sides, see example below:
1) flow and gifts
2) profitability and value
3) meaning and heart
4) skills and tools

These areas of focus are all connected in the center, or the sweet spot. That very term 'sweet spot' seems to be a place of bliss or complete harmony, doesn't it? Consider this project a roadmap toward following your bliss.

The four pathways above will overlap, and form sort of a flower shape or maybe a butterfly, if you prefer. The 'sweet spot' in the center might represent the state of being when all the pathways are working in harmony. !!! SMILES !!! Each pathway includes hand-written journaling exercises (below). This type of thinking and expression allows personal reflection as well as critical thinking without getting bogged down with being overly analytical.

Journaling Section ONE: Heart & Meaning

Creatives have an intense need for a sense of passion and purpose, it's like food for the creative soul.

creativityI have always wanted to...

What do I do just for intrinsic value?
(you'd do it even if it did not pay)

What do I value? What matters most?
What am I passionate about?

What does my deepest creative longing LOOK like?

Journaling Section TWO: Gifts and Flow

What unique innate gifts might I use best in strengthening value in business?

What do I get absorbed in for hours?
What do I do so well I barely need to exert effort?

What do you do that feels like rowing against the current?
What might I be doing if I were using my creative capacities to the fullest?

How am I being held back from being able to flow?

My unique gifts are...

Journaling Section THREE: Value & Profit

What unique value can I offer to customers?

What problem does my business solve for customers? Is there some pain I hope to eliminate?

Does my product or service fill a void in the marketplace?

What is the value I create for potential customers?

What can I do to enhance the value my customers receive?

Journaling Section FOUR: Tools & Skills

A person can be very smart, gifted, creative and even provide value, however entrepreneurs MUST have well-developed tools and strategies to succeed in business.

What tools, used well, would make the most significant difference?

What leadership skills do I need to develop and practice?
?

One Mandala Pattern for Making this Collage

Any simple design with four quadrants will do for this mandala collage project, this is just one possibility.

Here's a basic mandala design, just one of many that could be used for this project. This one is simple and contains FOUR basic quadrants for each of the variables stated above. Other mandala shapes could also be used, this is just one example... but for this project you want some mandala shape that has FOUR distinct quadrants and by the way... I notice that several creative minds chose a BUTTERFLY shape - LOVE it and maybe you do as well. You could even draw or use some artistic rendering of your own for this, any design with four basic quadrants that resonates and delights is all good. :-)

This is so me. I love to collage and create meaning. Love the shape of your collage. What a creative idea to make the shape of a butterfly. So much powerful symbolism here. Thanks for the ideas. I will definitely apply what I have seen and learned here.

Cross Creations

creative entrepreneurThe CrossCreations 'about me' mandala collage project will post here as it unfolds, including journal entries and the final project once it is created.

Project Started on ...
January 14, 2011

Commitment by Cross Creations is hereby stated and released to the universe via the internet, along with a welcome to others who might find this project to resonate with their own desires as inspiration and concrete strategy for creative entrepreneurs.

Project Idea Source: "The Creative Entrepreneur" by Lisa Sonora Beam => a DIY Visual Guidebook for Making Business ideas REAL!

Initial Journal Entries:

1) HEART & MEANING:

I've always wanted to be ... an artist. I play with various art mediums regularly, but mostly just for my own enjoyment or to create unique gifts for friends and family, especially photos. I've been an avid photographer for years, but only took a class one time (many moons ago) and have had a few photos published and once won an award in a photo contest (none for money, still felt great that my photos were chosen). To 'BE an artist' as one who could be surrounded by art forms as a job and get PAID for it - BLISS! I'd love to go to art school, or at least to enroll in various artist workshops from time to time. I think if I ever found a way to learn photoshop, I'd likely never come up for air and just enjoy the obsession. This project stems from an artist workshop that I would have LOVED to be right in the middle of - alas, I bought the book and am doing the project on my own for now.
What do I do for its own intrinsic value? Journal, read books, surf the internet, go for walks, collect numerous items (rocks, seashells, crystals, ephemerea...), play with photos.
What do I value? Integrity, positive thinking, self-esteem, creative expression, enlightenment, nature, compassion, philanthropy, unique beauty, manifestation, inspiration ...
What does my deepest creative longing look like? Maybe something similar to SARK's magic cottage, or an eclectic art studio where I'd immerse myself in various art mediums until I was ready to faint from delicious creative overload... and the outreach from that studio might resemble some internet 'home' - a website maybe like that of Artella, an online artist community that is an endless source of creative inspiration and whimsical expression.

2) GIFTS & FLOW:
What do you get absorbed in for hours? Beyond Squidoo? Reading, gardening, writing, imagining, photography... can become obsessed with creativity of many forms, interior decorating: painting - wallpapering - stencil paint & mural wall designs
What do you do that feels like rowing against the current? Paying bills, dealing with my evil ex, bookkeeping and any other boring paperwork (taxes bring bile to my throat), stressing over income, attempting to logic with teenage sons...

3) VALUE & PROFITABILITY:
The problem my business solves for the customer is... providing helpful free information toward target markets, suggestions
The pain I hope to eliminate for my customers is... the feeling of being lost and alone, the lack of courage to face fears, the time constraints that prevent finding effective solutions to issues quickly.
What do I do to enhance the value my customers receive from my product/service? helpful free information and artistic design projects, unbiased honest reviews, ideas for creative expression, artistic journeys, strategic planning for massive passive income

4) MANAGERIAL TOOLS & LEADERSHIP SKILLS:
What tool, used well, would make the most significant difference? A knock-out website equipped with links to artisitic journeys, social networks and automated tools (aweber) to keep it all in motion. (momentum)
What leadership skills do I need to develop? Confidence, self-esteem, motivation, focus on goals, time-management, networking, public speaking, keep vision in view

BRAINSTORM of key words for this collage & mandala creation...
creative entrepreneur, imagine, whimsical, think-outside-the-box, right brain, artist, journaling, creativity, ideas, unique, inspiration, spirit, manifesting, creative thinking, values, beach, photos, collage, beauty, mandala, vision, teacher, student, lifelong learner, toastmasters, affiliate income, writing, health, unbiased reviews, useful free information, blogging, natural, alternative, enlightenment...

Experimenting with Collage

collageJanuary 28, 2011

Having a blast with collage! The photo at right =>
is just one of several simple collages made as sort of a 'warm-up' to this exercise. After creating the collage I uploaded it to my free site for creating logos and banners to add the lettering.

I used my picture files to make several other collages in the process. What FUN!

My Mandala Collage - A Beginning

This photo above is the foundation for my collage mandala ( blurry now... updated version coming soon). LOVE the butterfly shape and yes that's me in the center, a favorite photo taken many moons ago in Mexico. Only the beginning....as time allows, I'll come back here and post the finished product, having FUN with this and adore collage art.

While I had all of my images and supplies out, I enjoyed a little collage fascination vacation before even beginning this project... and I do believe I have a new obsession! See some of my other collage art at my Creative Collage lens if you like, where you can vote on best captions or even add your own.
