The mandala deco: In Tantric Buddhism, it's the delicately laid grains of colored sand that form images representing aspects of the Buddha. Lama Karma Chopal returns to Santa Fe this weekend to create - and then dissolve - a new sand mandala deco at the Bodhi Stupa of KSK Buddhist Center off Airport Road. It is a blessing to bring peace and healing to viewers and the environment. The mandala deco art dates back 2,600 years and is preserved in the monasteries of India and Tibet.

Losang Samten spent the past five weeks creating the fine details of a vibrantly-colored sand mandala deco at Chico State University only to destroy it as if it were a mere sandcastle Saturday.
