The mandala deco: In Tantric Buddhism,

The mandala deco: In Tantric Buddhism, it's the delicately laid grains of colored sand that form images representing aspects of the Buddha. Tibetan monks spend weeks perfecting a circular design, only to destroy the finished artwork by sweeping up the sand and releasing it into a nearby creek. It symbolizes a pure and perfect universe and helps the monks become enlightened. And by being destroyed, the mandala puts life, and beauty

Lama Karma Chopal returns to Santa Fe this weekend to create - and then dissolve - a new sand mandala deco at the Bodhi Stupa of KSK Buddhist Center off Airport Road. The sand mandala decor, called a "kilkhor" in Tibetan, is a Tibetan Buddhist tradition that symbolizes the transitory nature of things. As part of Buddhist belief, all material things are seen as transitory. A sand mandala is an example of this.

Wheel of Time" mandala deco : Kalachakra mandala

Precisely placed grains of sand are slowly being added to the "Wheel of Time" mandala deco-- the Kalachakra mandala -- in the lobby of the Bell Memorial Union at Chico State University. It is a blessing to bring peace and healing to viewers and the environment. The mandala deco art dates back 2,600 years and is preserved in the monasteries of India and Tibet.

Losang Samten spent the past five weeks creating the fine details of a vibrantly-colored sand mandala deco at Chico State University only to destroy it as if it were a mere sandcastle Saturday. The Buddhist monk explained that the dismantling of the mandala is part of its creation, and symbolizes a new beginning rather than an end.
