What is manga?

Manga are Japanese comics which have been popular since the post-war period. In Japan people of all ages enjoy manga, and there is a manga style to suit every reader's taste. Manga are normally published as serials in collective magazines. Popular manga are then bound in tankobon volumes, and are frequently produced as an anime series.

Today manga are translated into other languages to be read around the world. I have located some of the most popular manga titles in several genres, perfect if you're looking for a new manga series to read.

Types of manga

Shounen

Shounen manga are geared toward teenage boys. The focus is battle, action, and the power of nakama.

Seinen

Seinen is the adult male version of shounen. Violence and content is more graphic and less censored.

Shoujo and Josei

Shoujo is the teen girl's equivalent of shounen. These manga focus on romance and relationships. These are easily identified by the big-eyed characters.

Josei manga are similar, but intended for adult women.

Shoujo-ai

Shoujo-ai is literally "girl love", with the focus on female/female romantic relationships.

Shounen-ai

Shounen-ai is literally "boy love", with the focus on male/male romantic relationships. Those with more explicit content are referred to as "yaoi".
