Your Fortune Lies in Furry!

Come on, Anime is nice and all -- it certainly might be helping the fortunes of both animation and comic books as we know it -- but for all intents and purposes, we're still importing a culture that most of us couldn't even hope to be a part of.

Even worse for budding American Artists (and anyone else who can't claim any Asian blood), people can tell the difference between "Real Japan Manga Taste" and "Baka Gaijin Roundeye" in a heartbeat, and avoid it like the plague!

The reason? A lot of people who want to draw manga are... no surprise here... manga fans. Young manga fans, especially. Drawing manga (or any other type of sequential art, really) requires a lot of "invisible" structure underneath that isn't always obvious to younger readers.

Furry art, on the other hand, is universal; people have been drawing animals for as long as they've been drawing, period, There's no such thing as "Fake Furry Art", just good furry art and bad furry art -- and it comes from all over the world too, not just Japan!

And for whatever reason, furry fans are usually older than the average manga fan... so it's less likely that an "amateur" furry artist will mess up basic proportions or foundations the way an an amateur manga artist might.

(Oh, and if you plan on becoming famous? Good luck trying to stand out in a homogenized art style like Manga! By the way, your artistic rights are much better protected outside of Manga. Check out the stuff about the "Tokyopop Manga Pilot Contract" if you don't believe me.)

Anime and Manga have their moments, but when it comes down to it, if you have to start drawing ... go with furries!

So... Furry, or Manga?

Gotta be the Furry.

RoDee says:

I would say anthromorphic art because It not as simplistic and pointy as manga or anime. Anime/manga may be known for their good storylines for a broad audience, pictures and I like that but; amine animation has less frames and It doesn't seem as smooth as traditional Animation Like Disney, or Dreamworks for example. And besides techically you see anthromorphic characters as mascots for schools/colleges, on your favorite cereal, cartoons from the 50's-Present and Art.

graphictruth says:

You need a none of the above, but... I do draw furries and I don't draw manga style so I have to pick "furry."

But I draw the line at making everything fuzzy. I put furries - various shapeshifters, weres and otherwise fur-clad creatures - into my stories in a broader fantasy context, and I also like to depict sexuality within context, in a way that makes rational sense. That's an issue with both Furry and Manga, I've noticed. I'm not saying it's good or bad, more that it's an obvious feature of both genres.

Anubis says:

I'll go for Furry rather than Anime/Manga as there is a broader variety of drawing techniques/styles and genres present in Furry media(ranging from the cool looking Sonic characters, cute Disney characters, comical Looney Tunes characters, and others like TMNT, Road Rovers, Redwall, Arthur, Swat Kats, Starfox, Secret of NIHM, Crash Bandikoot, Digimon, even the Egyptian anthropomorphic gods are also considered as Furry to an extend)

"Furry is usually drawn in a manga style anyway..."
Ahem...watch Disney's Robin Hood or Redwall and tell me if they are drawn in an anime/manga style...

"Manga can be drawn in all styles and all sorts of genres"
So does Furry

"You can draw an animeish furry character but you can't draw a furryish anime character"
FYI,
Anime-ish furry character = furry character incorporating anime-like characteristic (sleek looking hairstyles, sharp chins, etc) e.g. Renamon from Digimon
Furry-ish anime character = anime character (usually female) incorporating furry-like characteristic (fur, whiskers, cat ears, fox tails, etc) e.g. Horo from Spice and Wolf

I'm not trying to say that all Anime/Manga styles are horrible or whatsoever, It's just that I prefer Furry more than Anime/Manga

Wolf girl says:

furrys.......RULE!!!!!!!*dances around to room*i luvs wolf furrys the best cuz wolves........RULE!!!!!

Anonymous says:

Definitely furry, hands down.
Manga is melodramatic and uncomfortable, furry is just artistic and funny
Anime is over saturated and looks the same in most situations, but furries have animated cartoon media on LOCK. Be it Movies, TV Shows, and Games.

KapitalKat says:

Fuuuurrry. :D

Cody says:

as far as im concerned furry should be more popular than mangas

=_= says:

Furry is more cool then manga

Seph says:

Furry is the best ^,..,^

Fenneca Fox says:

Furries are way better than Manga. First of all there are so many things you can do with a furry. You can morph it, make it evolve, transform, maybe even create a whole new species from scratch. Furries just seem to have moore freedom than manga. And also I agree with the article. With furries anyone can feel comforatble, maybe even get famous, but with anime and manga mostly only the best of the best asians get famous off of successfully mastering that art. American manga artist are not recognized so often.

CakeFart says:

Anime is cool and all, but I'm tired of looking at the same crap over and over. The anime style is way over inbred and way saturated. This applies to swath of furry characters drawn in this style too. I lump them in the anime camp as well. You can switch up styles when drawing animals, but anime has WAY less latitude for diversity.

Obama says:

Not all furry art is drawn in mango/animu style.
These might happen because some artist changed his/her/its mind and went to the furry fandom.
So, it's better to think about it before saying anything reckless.

Ginger says:

Definitely furry. Furries are awesome

Jesus says:

Furry

Punky says:

furries ftw

Manga and Anime are so Kawaii!

oh god no says:

Guys, I think you have missed a very prominant issue.

Furry art is horrible.
lots anime/manga art is horrible as well, but not all of it is horrible at least.

I hate fandoms says:

Let me go one step further in regards to the title of this page "Who has the better cartoons?". What cartoons does the furry fandom have exactly? There is no furry animation industry. I really hope that the furry fandom isn't trying to lay claim to classic cartoons simply because they anthropomorphic characters in them (Secret of Nimh, Dinsney's Robin Hood, Looney Toons, etc.).

I hate fandoms says:

There's really nothing to debate here. I don't think alot of you understand what an "art style" really is so let me attempt the best I can to define it for you.

An art style is HOW something is drawn and rendered to give the piece a distinctive characteristics that is unique to either the individual artist or group of artists.

That being said there is no furry art style. Furry is simply a subject matter. You can draw a cat person any number of ways, from the simplistic to the hyper realistic but the fact remains that the SUBJECT is still a cat person. In Anime/manga you can have any subject but its unifying features will be the way the characters are drawn to adhere to that style.

You can draw an animeish furry character but you can't draw a furryish anime character.

Hype says:

Manga can be drawn in all styles and all sorts of genres--plus the animation is usually quite beautiful!

Delarge says:

Furry is usually drawn in a manga style anyway...

harry says:

I say , if you put one of them in a movie like furrys , I'll say furrys , but manga got movies on lock.

you need to know? says:

Even though I love the furry style, I think the manga style is just as cool.
