David Ortiz's Spicy Mango Salsa

So David Ortiz is a baseball player here in Boston. And as a well known person in the area he gets endorsement deals for local products. But one of the things they also show is "I found a great recipe for mango salsa. then he tries it and goes "Ooohhh Mama!" waving his hand to brush away the heat.

Any hoo, I tried looking this up on the internet. Could not find David Ortiz's mango salsa recipe, but I found something that could, in theory produce "Oooohhhh Mama!" effects.

I made it and suffice to say, it did not make me go "Ooohhh Mama!". I was somewhat disappointed, but still undaunted. I decided to take another shot at making Mango Salsa.

The recipe was this:

2.5 mangos, sliced and chopped
.5 mangos pureed in food processor.
1 small shallot
1 jalepeno pepper
1 habenero pepper
1 lime
1/2 c. to 3/4 c. cilantro
salt and pepper to taste

Cut up the mangos and dice them into nice sized chunks, but not too big. Take half of a mango's worth of slices and blend in a food processor. Add mango puree to mango chunks. Throw in Shallot, jalepeno, habenero, cilantro and lime juice to food processor and blend to a fine consistency.

If you don't have a food processor, chop ingredients as fine as you can and mash with a potatoe masher. Mix in the pepper/cilantro/lime juice mixture to mangos and stir thoroughly. Add salt and pepper as needed.

This batch of David Ortiz mango salso really did produce the "ooohhh mama!" results. A bit TOO well. The Ickabetty's mouth was on fire. My mouth was really hot until I drank some milk. So I'm going to cool it down with another 2 mangos, sliced and chopped next time. And I'll only use 1/2 a habenero pepper.

Enjoy!

Mango Salsa Recipe

Mango Salsa

Serve mango salsa with grilled pork, fish, or poultry.

1 large mango, peeled, cut in 1/4-inch cube
1/4 cup red bell pepper, cut in 1/4-inch dice
1 1/2 tablespoons fresh basil, finely chopped
1 1/2 teaspoons red wine vinegar
2 teaspoons lime juice
1/2 teaspoon Sugar
1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and finely chopped, or to taste

In a medium bowl, combine all ingredients. Mix well.
Let stand at room temperature a half hour before serving or refrigerate up to 24 hours. This does not hold up well and should be used within the 24 hours.

Serves 4. Recipe adapted from "The Meatless Gourmet."
