Introduction to Manhole Rehabilitation
According to Wikipedia.com, "A manhole is the top opening to an underground utility vault used to house an access point for making connections or performing maintenance on underground and buried public utility and other services including sewers, telephone, electricity, storm drains and gas." *

Why Do Manholes Need Rehabilitation?
As you can imagine, the environment inside a manhole is quite corrosive due to the hydrogen sulphide gas that is produced by the wastewater. Most manholes are concrete, or brick with a concrete mortar between them. Concrete is porous. Acid from the wastewater is able to enter through the "pores" of the concrete, and a chemical reaction occurs in the cement and changes its structure. The cement turns into gypsum, a white, chalky substance (that makes up drywall), and the rocks, or aggregate, in the concrete are left to crumble away.
These manholes begin to leak wastewater, which contaminates the groundwater supply, and the natural environment nearby.
