Introduction to Manhole Rehabilitation

According to Wikipedia.com, "A manhole is the top opening to an underground utility vault used to house an access point for making connections or performing maintenance on underground and buried public utility and other services including sewers, telephone, electricity, storm drains and gas." *

Rehabilitation is the process of restoring the integrity of the manhole structure.

Why Do Manholes Need Rehabilitation?

As you can imagine, the environment inside a manhole is quite corrosive due to the hydrogen sulphide gas that is produced by the wastewater.

Most manholes are concrete, or brick with a concrete mortar between them. Concrete is porous. Acid from the wastewater is able to enter through the "pores" of the concrete, and a chemical reaction occurs in the cement and changes its structure. The cement turns into gypsum, a white, chalky substance (that makes up drywall), and the rocks, or aggregate, in the concrete are left to crumble away.

These manholes begin to leak wastewater, which contaminates the groundwater supply, and the natural environment nearby.

The Solution to Deterioration

Manhole rehabilitation is the solution to deterioration! There is no need to replace manholes that are crumbling and leaking. Rather than replacing them, we repair the manholes to a better-than-new condition, all without digging them up! Our proprietary cement liner material will renew the structure, stop water infiltration, fill voids, and build up deteriorated brick and concrete surfaces. Our system utilizes microsilica sand added to the concrete mixture to reduce the permeability of the concrete, thereby preventing the chemical attack of the wastewater.
