For those who trim their nails regularly getting a manicure is still worth the trip. By trimming your nails you're not actually taking care of the cuticles surrounding the nail bed and skin that can get infected if not properly groomed. For nail biters I fear it's even worse; besides the damage to the skin and nails there is another important part of the body that takes a hit each time a nail is bitten: your teeth. The at home manicure is one that will always pay off in the long run. Getting a professional manicure to learn the tricks of the trade is not a bad idea when beginning to do your own. With the right utensils an at home manicure can be achieved quickly and cheaply. There are a few problems with giving yourself manicures at home that include: the process of getting your nails and utensils ready, using your non-dominate hand to paint the other hands nails, and the purchasing of the products. If you have a membership to a large supply store or an inexpensive drug store that will help when getting the nail polish remover, cotton balls, and nail polish. By having clear nail polish closer to your nail bed it hides the space that the real nail would show against any more obvious nail polish colors. If you're a nail biter getting acrylic nails is a sure fire way to quit biting your nails that you can no longer reach. Acrylic nails are not bad for your natural nails and will VERY rarely cause any problems for the length they are applied. If you have a sore spot on one of your fingernails or if you have an odd odor coming from one of the nails it is very important to seek medical advice for how to proceed further. If you are not used to longer nails they will take some time getting used to and especially learning to type or do normal day to day things that weren't an issue before with shorter nails. The good news about acrylic nails is that if you don't like the color you have chosen, the style you have chose, or the want them to be removed all of that can be taken care of.
