This Lens is about the life experiences of D.J. Moore (mannasugar) Born in Buena Park, CA on my brother's birthday he was born in 1962. He always thought I was his birthday present that he could not wear out and believe me, he tried.
We moved north to Grover city CA when I was a toddler, which is a small town on the coast, north of Santa Maria and south of San Luis Obispo. I considered it Paradise. Everyday I was in awe of California. I loved the fog, the sun, the hills, the ocean, fishing off of the pier, the bikinis, going to school on the hill above the ocean, the dunes, the lakes, the Eucalyptus trees, the shrubbery, the people.

STEEL WHEELS?

Energy for realNo, we did not have steel wheels. My brother Curtis was a skateboarder and I road around on my bike. The funny thing about my brother Curtis was he was a complete nerd. When he wasn't reading or building model airplanes or drawing dragons he was riding his skateboard, he threw a football like he was using the wrong hand, he couldn't run normal but he could do 6 ½ 360's on a skateboard. My dad built a 6 foot half pipe in our back yard. I was always afraid of heights but not Curtis; he would have that skateboard at the top with one wheel hanging onto the edge. I wish we had a camcorder back then. I was good at riding it, it was tremendously fun.

My Dad never had much to say, especially to me, I was quiet and he was quiet. I wanted a new bike and I was afraid to ask my Dad to buy me one. I talked to my Mom and she said to ask him that she thought it would be okay. I couldn't believe, He bought me a new bike. I was sporting one of the nicest bikes in San Luis Obispo county. See pic below, my bike was the same as the picture except mine was red.

Energy for realHey, theres a real paradigm shift! Moving from California to Kansas, WHAT... Yes, I went to High school in Kansas. I drove a tractor on a farm, I walked 5 miles to town and back. My mom bought a house for $4500. in Blue mound Kansas. The population about 300. I went to High school in Mound city, we later moved to Iola Kansas with my brother and I graduated from Iola High School in 1984. I failed one year because I was not focused on grades and I did not do the work. I returned the next year and got my diploma. I have since lost it and I have never had anyone ask me for it. As soon as I graduated I went back to California. This was the bike I had except that mine was red with yellow wheels.

Energy for realLived next door to where I was raised with my brother Curtis and Don Lujan among others, we all had separate rooms.
Got my first job at the "Ice plant" in San Luis Obispo, it was 90 degrees outside but I had to wear a jacket to work, Got my second job at "Color Glow west" sanding and prepping cars to be painted,
Worked for the Ca. Army Nat'l guard full-time (mechanic) in Paso Robles California
Attended one semester College Allen Hancock College Santa Maria, Ca. (Auto-mechanics)4.0 GPA. My re-up date for the N.G. was 6 Nov. 1988 at which time I did not re-enter and I could not work for the guard full-time, the result was
1984 Nissan pickup-repossessed, still young and not knowing how to network to get a job I went to Pennsylvania via Bismarck, 1991 went on the road, Bismarck ND 2 weeks, Ben Salem PA, Ft. Walton beach Fla,

10 years in Colorado

I lived in Florida for 6 months, the next job was in Colorado. I lived in Aurora. I had been installing Siding for a year. Colorado was a great place to live. The best place I had ever lived except for California. The main reason I like California better was because of the cold and of course California is my home. If you ever get a chance to go to Colorado and you have not been, even if you have been, go. It is a beautiful state. Denver Broncos won the Super bowl while I was there. Colorado Avalanche won the Stanley cup while I was there.
I didn't like the cold, it wasn't just the cold. I have seen it snow in June and in September. The winter weather is very long in Colorado. I moved to Phoenix where it was nice and hot.

February 16th, I had been living in Phoenix for about 5 months when my brother in-law called and told me my brother Curtis had died in his sleep. I guess he won't wear me out after all.

Visited CA lots of times but never Kansas. So CA would have to get my vote.

I'd say New York City, where I live, if it were one of the choices, but that's a different country. Or New Orleans, but that's a different country too. Okay, California. Kansas seemed long and flat and strange when I went through as a teenager and nothing has changed my mind. What a relief when the Rockies hit the horizon!

i think connecticut, rhode island and maine would be the great places to live, far away from the madding crowd. since you have only 2 choices, i prefer kansas. perhaps i could be whisked to the land of oz.

I think Kansas, less stress and affordable, one of my daughters live there, they house and land they have could never be afforded in Cal.

    i am glad to meet you. so sorry about your brother. didn't know that houses in kansas are so cheap those days, the problems are tornados.

    The duel arrived from my growing up in California and moving to Kansas, which is a major change in lifestyle. At the time I hated Kansas, but now it is a treasured past.....

    I moved from California to Missouri (also lived in Colorado) would like to get out of Wisconsin, but don't know where to go to have both our daughters within reach...never a happy medium.

    I've never been to Calfiornia or Kansas. However, I have travelled through different states and my favorite is a toss up between Virginia (think sandy beaches) and Montana because of the Rocky Mountains I've seen in that state.
