Is Grilling A Man's Job Or Not?

Ranked #3,245 in Food & Cooking, #62,807 overall

WHAT DO YOU THINK? SHOULD IT BE THE JOB OF THE MAN OR THE WOMAN TO DO THE GRILLING?

Rumours abound that it is a man's job to do the grilling. This page will discuss that myth plus it will give you your opportunity to SOUND OFF on the issue.

What do you think? Is grilling a man's job or not? What is the reality at your house? Do you even own a BBQ? Of course, if you do not, the point is irrelevant.

Please take a few minutes to let us know what you think and, most importantly, to vote whether or not you think it is a man's job to MAN THE GRILL.

A consumer survey by MaPS in June of this year reported that 43 million families will use a grill at least once per week in the summertime.

Let's Start With A Survey: Who Is In Charge of the BBQ At Your House?

Grilling expert Steven Raichlen, author of the Barbecue Bible and other grilling cookbooks estimates that 60-70 percent of grilling is done by men. Let's see if we can help prove that figure here in our poll...

The menu is all planned,
we know who is bringing what.
We aren't concerned about
who will be doing the grilling.

Is Grilling A Man's Job Or Not?

Absolutely, positively, I think that grilling is a man's job...

CameronPoe says:

So far, grillers in my family have been me, my brother, and my uncle.

COUNTRYLUTHIER says:

All the grills, fryers ,and meat charring and smoking tools are mine1

spirituality says:

I don't think men are better at grilling than women. However, a man cooking - no way I'm going to interfere.

Mickie_G says:

I like to give my husband some responsibility in the food arena.

Heather426 says:

anytime I can get help with the cooking I'm happy!

Pukeko says:

Men get the BBQ and the remote

daybreak says:

Men only. Of course most of us walk away due to short attention span and its usually a female that sees the smoke and comes to avert pending disaster.

:)

clouda9 says:

In our house my hubby is the king of the grill. I'd grill too, it's just that he loves it so and has the knack :-)

Sylvestermouse says:

While I believe a woman can do anything, I have no problem allowing my husband, my father, my son or either of my brothers to give me a break from the kitchen. It has primarily been a man thing in our family simply because it is how our men give us a "night off" and I am thrilled to defer to their grilling genius :)

WhiteOak50 says:

I am going to have to say its a Man Job!! Who wants to stand in the hot sun and sweat cooking?

macmcrae says:

Definitely! Of course we could do it, if we had to, but don't we do the cooking everyday invariably? As far as I'm concerned, it's definitely a man's job, and luckily enough, my man agrees! :o)

ElleDeeEsse says:

It's just tradition isn't it? We buy the food, plan the menu, prepare the marinades, do the salads, nibblies and other accompaniments, organise all the paraphernalia such as condimants, tools, plates, cutlery, etc, have a dessert ready for after and clean up when it's done. But he cooked!

sandyspider says:

My husband is the one that starts up the grill. We both actually add what we are grilling. But it gives him a boost to think he is Mr. Barbecue!

stargazer00 says:

It's a man's job around here. Like Susan, I season the meat and make the side dishes and clean up, but he does the actual grilling.

Susan52 says:

Absolutely at our house. Of course I'm the one who prepares the food up to the point it's ready for the grill - and I fix the side dishes, set the table, do the dishes. . . I need to get my man to do those other things, too!

No way, Monkeybrain! Female grill masters can man the grill as well as any guy can...

WeekendGriller says:

Real Men are never threatened by a woman who wants to grill.

Fun lens. Thanks for the laugh.

wishfulthinking777 says:

I grill all the time, I think females are perfectly capable. Plus- I even cut and use 100 percent organic mesquite from my backyard...no charcoal here! Our food is delicious!

ohcaroline says:

Actually I say that it is whoever does the best job. I do my best and am always trying different methods. Always looking to improve.

tssfacts says:

Since it just "me, myself and I" if any grilling is done I have to do it. But I love to grill both indoors and out. In fact when I build my new home I am having an outdoor kitchen included.

hlkljgk says:

I grilled this last night: http://flic.kr/p/8iahHs MMMMMMMM...

bethd821 says:

Since there's no man here, it's a woman's job. It was the only way I could get my husband to cook.

Flynn_the_Cat says:

Unfortunately, 'grilling' or barbequeing - is the KIDS job in my family. Whenever the BBQ goes on the parents send me or a sibling to do it!

rms says:

Girls can do anything boys can do better! LOL Seriously, I wish it were only a mans job at my house.

kohuether says:

I love to use the grill! I love cooking so it seems natural that I do the grilling.

annmackiemiller says:

well I do think women can do as well as a man at just about anything, they can keep the grill for me

happynutritionist says:

We both grill around here, but on weekends when hubby is home, he does the grilling. I WILL admit that he does a better job of it...but it's really tough to admit that one...LOL

Women Cook.
Men Grill.

Reasons Why Women Who Don't Grill Should:

  • THE EXCITEMENT FACTOR - When you grill you get to use matches and pitchforks and the like.
  • THE MEN - Have you ever noticed the gathering of men around the BBQ??? Single women, particularly, should do the barbecuing!
  • THE CLEAN UP - What clean up? That's right. If you grill you don't have to do the dishes!
  • THE ESCAPE - Planned properly, you can enjoy a cold beverage while you stand and watch the food cook and someone else can worry about the other little details.
  • THE TASTE - Grilled food, done properly, is just plain delicious.

As long as the bbq tastes good, I don't really care who's cooking.
  • WeekendGriller Nov 5, 2011 @ 3:21 pm | delete
Wait! I just noticed that a woman created this.

Is this a sly plan to get us guys to do all the work?

    Women are good.

Great debate topic...grilling is a man's job in our house. Hmm I'd have to agree with Sylvestermouse - my man looks darn sexy while he is grilling too ;-)

Thanks for participating in the Food Lovers group over at Rocket Mom's.
  • Sylvestermouse Jul 9, 2010 @ 8:00 am | delete
An excellent debate! I love the aprons. You know, I really do enjoy just sitting outside and watching my husband grill. There is something very sexy about a man cooking for me :) Yes, I did use that word. I am nearly 50 years old and I have no problem admitting that I think my husband of 27 yrs. is still sexy, especially in an apron :)
  • Treasures-By-Brenda Jul 9, 2010 @ 8:52 am | delete
I hope your husband knows how you feel about him cooking for you!
  • Sylvestermouse Jul 9, 2010 @ 9:08 am | delete
Yes ma'am, he definitely knows. If I didn't tell him, how else could we keep that "spark" alive :)
  • Treasures-By-Brenda Jul 9, 2010 @ 9:47 am | delete
Since we're talking grilling, I guess you could keep the spark alive with a BBQ lighter or a book of matches or maybe even the ignition switch...Oh, you mean you were NOT talking about the spark of the BBQ?

    Sorry couldn't resist.

BTW, My ignition switch is broken, but I am definitelly talking about the GRILL here.
  • Sylvestermouse Jul 13, 2010 @ 1:30 pm | delete
LOL!!! So glad it is only the ignition switch for the grill that is broken. While that can be bad, the other could be down right sad.

I need to tell you, our little exchange here influenced my apron for my grilling lens :) I simply couldn't resist.
  • Flynn_the_Cat Jul 10, 2010 @ 5:43 pm | delete
Your husband is 27yrs old? Well done!
  • Sylvestermouse Jul 13, 2010 @ 1:40 pm | delete
Whoa, no, I may be good, but I am not that good! Nope, my husband is within 3 years of my age and we have been married for 27 years.
  • Sylvestermouse Jul 13, 2010 @ 2:02 pm | delete
I just had to come back and tell you Flynn that I was laughing so hard that I totally spit coffee all over my keyboard when I read your comment! Sometimes I write the way I would talk to someone without considering how it will be read. That really was just too funny. I laugh at myself now :)
