Integrating New Manufacturing Software can be Difficult

Integrating a new manufacturing software package can be difficult. There are several common integration issues that most companies face. The purpose of this lens is to educate the reader about those issues and provide tips for avoiding them.

How to Avoid Common Manufacturing Software Integration Issues

In any business, you'll find people that get so caught up in the day-to-day action that they often work inefficiently. In the case of a manufacturing company, this often means that they do not put their manufacturing software package to proper use. Frequently it is not until after the system is implemented that the fruits of improper preparation come to the forefront.

In seemingly no time. the learning curve for a new system flattens out and the system quickly becomes clogged with inaccurate data. This leads to flawed business decisions as decision makers work off of inaccurate reports generated from inaccurate data.

This is only one of the more common integration issues, and the key to avoiding all of them is to prepare for a new system BEFORE you integrate it, not during the integration. It is highly important that decision makers ensure that all procedures and processes currently in place will adapt to a new software package with ease, otherwise the company may be better off searching for a custome manufacturing software application. All business models are not alike, so it is important to consider the adaptability of processes and software before making a decision. No off the shelf application will work for every business.

Additionally, the company should focus on end-user training and involvement. A significant amount of "up-front" work may be necessary to ensure a smooth transition, but the end result will be worth it. Many companies do a thorough analysis of the manufacturing software solutions available externally but fail to do a thorough internal analysis - which leads to problems down the road.

Consulting manufacturing software reviews can help, as can asking questions. Some questions that are worth asking:

1. Are all the departments and components of the company integrated into existing business processes?

2. Is old data structure compatable with the new software?

3. Are data collection methods compatable with the new software?

Of course, there are several more questions that you should ask in searching for a manufacturing software package that you can integrate with your current systems and processes. This points to one of the big difficulties in selecting new software - the fact that you can see the right solution from both angles (the manufacturing company and the software providers). The secret is to know the right answers before you begin.

Being able to adapt to a new set of business circumstances is good thing. A business that can change its products, service, costs, marketing, strategy etc is far more likely to be able to take advantage of evolving opportunities within existing markets or open up new market opportunities than a business that is averse or slow to change. Having a flexible ERP system or business management system enables business to do this. if you like, take a look at my
