Where Does Manuka Honey Come From and What Makes It So Different?
Active Manuka Honey comes exclusively from one of the most natural and beautiful countries on the planet. New Zealand. The honey is derived from the Manuka Bush hence the name Manuka Honey . A bush which has always been known for its therapeutic properties, commonly known as the tea tree, and its product tee tree oil or Manuka Oil.
This bush is native to New Zealand, though there are similar bushes in Australia with similar properties. Growing wild and thick throughout the vast New Zealand countryside, bee hives near these bushes feed exclusively on its flowers producing a mono floral honey.
Tee Tea oil has long been renowned for its excellent anti bacterial, antifungal properties being used for anything from mouth washes through to an antiseptic. Manuka honey harnesses the properties of the tee tree and combines it with the natural antiseptic properties of the honey, producing an amazing bi product Active Manuka Honey.
Speaking like this it would only make sense to get the 2 and mix them together to produce Manuka Honey . Unfortunately it's not that easy. Our humble little friend the honey bee plays a massive part in making the honey active to produce a far superior honey.
There is something special about the process of how the honey bee utilises the pollen the extra enzymes it adds to make the 2 ingredient work synergistically with each other.
Manuka Honey is far more stable than standard honeys. Standard honeys when used topically will fight most strains of bacteria for a limited period of time, though when it exposed to heat or external enzymes it will quickly break down. Manuka Honey is a lot more resistant to heat and external enzymes. This gives it the power to continue fighting for much longer periods, though on top of this there is an additional weapon known as the Unique Manuka Factor giving it properties which no bacteria has ever shown any resistance.
UMF Fact Or Fiction??
What is UMF? What does it mean exactly? How does it compare to MGO?
The Unique Manuka Factor (UMF) is the main scale used for testing Manuka Honey and for those sceptics unfortunately it is a fact, being compared to breakthrough products such a CO Enzyme Q10.Manuka honey has been extensively researched throughout the world. Research continues to this day, with the growing concern of antibiotic resistant bacteria positive results being attained though using Manuka Honey has seen the product is continually being trailed and tested in hospitals throughout the world.
UMF is the formula which is used to measure the antibacterial properties of the honey. This was developed by Dr Peter Molan Bio Chemist and Professor from the University of Wiakato New Zealand. Dr Peter Molan was one of the main pioneers of manuka Honey spending over 20 years of his life dedicated to the research of Active Manuka Honey. It was always known by native New Zealanders Manuka Honey harnessed additional healing properties. Though as Dr Peter Molan discovered, these antibacterial properties ranged from honey to honey.
With this throughout the mid 1990s he set out testing the honeys and devised the UMF scale. Testing these honeys against solutions of standard antiseptics such as Phenol and Carbolic his scale was complete.
A honey which performed to the standards of a 15% solution of phenol would become a 15+ UMF
A honey which performed to the standards of a 25% solution of phenol or carbolic, would become a 25+ UMF.
Though despite his hard work he still was unsure what this factor exactly was which still unknown until a discovery in 2006.
As reasech on the product spread throughout the world a research team headed by Professor Thomas Henle from the Technical University of Dresden Germany discovered naturally occurring Methyglyoxal (MGO) to be the dominant constituent in Manuka Honey. Testing more than 80 honeys from around the world proved levels of Dietary Methylglyoxal in them did not exceed 7 mg/kg and when compared to New Zealand's Manuka Honey varied from 30mg to as high as 700 mg/kg, more than 70 times higher than in ordinary honey.
Using an agar diffusion assay on Manuka and other honeys, the researchers identified the anti-bacterial strength of the honeys were directly related to the concentration of Methyglyoxal,
Professor Thomas Henle demonstrated that Manuka Honey should contain at least 100mg/kg of Methylglyoxal to reliably inhibit bacteria such as Staphylococcus Aureas and E.coli.
With this he devised the MGO scale.
100mg/kg of Methylglyoxal = MGO 100
100mg/kg of Methylglyoxal = MGO 700
Comparing the 2 UMF versus MGO does create debates throughout the Manuka Honey work place it is argued by Tomas Healy that UMF is not as accurate as the MGO method where as UMF is testing the anti bacterial properties directly.
UMF still remains the dominate scale throughout the market as well as throughout the hospitals in trails and research.
It is advised with scaling that anything over MGO 100 or UMF 10+ is desired when treating an infection. The highest level of activity for each scale is MGO 700 and UMF 25+
