The UMF® Standard
Varying Quality of Honey
UMF® = UNIQUE MANUKA FACTORAll honey has some level of the antibacterial chemical hydrogen peroxide, which is produced by enzymes in the honey.
Manuka Honey has an antibacterial activity, due primarily to hydrogen peroxide formed in a "slow-release" manner by the enzyme glucose oxidase present. Manuka Honey is the only honey available that is tested for its antibacterial activity.
The UMF® standard is to distinguish between ordinary Manuka honey and the unique Active Manuka Honey. Ordinary Manuka honey has only the hydrogen peroxide anti-bacterial property which is common to most honeys. Active Manuka Honey has both the hydrogen peroxide antibacterial property and its own natural antibacterial property, which many doctors
now believe gives it unique therapeutic uses.
THE UMF® RATING
The name UMF® is followed by a number that indicates the strength of the UMF® antibacterial property in a batch of UMF® Manuka Honey tested in the licensed laboratory after the honey has been packed.
A UMF® 10 rating is the minimum to qualify to use the name UMF® and be suitable for treating infections.

- Hi Brenda! Glad you enjoyed my lens! Manuka honey is so amazing I have a jar of it in my cupboard at all times, you can get it from any good health food shop. But be aware that there are some brands out there that carry the name "manuka honey" but if they do not have an official "UMF" rating they will be just the same as any other honey. It is expensive compared to regular honey but it is well worth the extra as I can't remember the last time I had a cold let alone the flu! I also use it on any cuts, burns and cold sores I get! If you want to know anymore, please ask away, I can talk about Manuka honey til the cows come home!

- I knew honey was better than regular sugar but I did not know it had other properties. Is it available worldwide -- other than through sites like eBay? Well done lens!
