What is Maori Jade, explanation of NZ greenstone jade

In New Zealand, nephrite* jade is called greenstone or, in Maori language, pounamu. This greenstone or pounamu from New Zealand is a unique type of jade. Pounamu is the common name a number of varieties of the green-hued minerals.

* Jade may consist of two different mineral species called jadeite or nephrite.

Greenstone/ Jade (Pounamu) is the most highly valued, semi-precious stone the Maori possessed which they used to create pendants and tools.

Maori jade was primarily harvested at the South Island, hence the Maori name for the South Island, Te Wai Pounamu. Te Wai Pounamu literally means "The [land of] Greenstone Water", or Te Wahi Pounamu-"The Place of Greenstone".

Maori Jade Pendants, from Tool to Jewelry

designs, history, symbolism

Maori chief wearing a pounamu jade pendantMuch pendants were originally tools which, when not in use, were worn as pendants (talismans) or even earrings. The fish hook for example, was initially made of bone but later on, it became a piece of jewelry often crafted from Maori jade.

Also the so called kaka rings, used to restrain the huge captive kaka parrots from flying away is an example of a tool worn as jewelry (mainly as earrings).

Gradually the ornamental use, opposite of functional use, became more prominent. At the same time the designs became more intricate and meaningful.

Pounamu, the Maori Gold

raw Maori jade (pounamu)Pounamu has historically been valued very highly by the Maori. The value of Maori jade can be compared with the value of gold for the Europeans in that time. The hardness of the greenstone and the harsh environments in which the pounamu was excavated made it a very exclusive stone.

Because pounamu jade is so hard it was very laborious and difficult to carve. Despite this, the Maori artists of the past centuries were able to create the most stunning designs. Each of them having its own spiritual meaning.

This material plays an important role in Maori culture and is still considered a taonga, which means treasure. Therefore, pounamu is protected under the Treaty of Waitangi, and the exploitation of it is restricted and closely monitored.

Tools, weapons, ornaments, and other artifacts were made of it; in particular adzes, the 'mere' (short club), and the Hei-tiki (neck pendant). Nephrite jewellery of Maori design is widely popular with locals and tourists, although some of the jade used for these is now imported from British Columbia and elsewhere.[10]

Spiritual Symbolic Meaning of Maori Jade

Maori jade was thought to have magical power. Pounamu was believed to have its own mana (spirit), and was handed down by generations as valuable heirlooms, and often given as gifts to seal important agreements. Not only neck ornaments were crafted but also ceremonial batons and clubs, and blades of ceremonial weapons such as adzes and chizels. For these special items greenstone with the highest quality was used.

Jade The Story of New Zealand Commonly Known as Greenstone

by G.L. Pearce

Jade sometimes conjures up romantic fancies of ancient Eastern cultures where it was not only valued for it's rarity and beauty, but revered for its symbolic virtues. It's other names of neprite of - in New Zealand - greenstone, are not so evocative, but the story is no less fascinating.

In his usual concise and eminently readable fashion, Mr. Pearce describes the use of this semi-precious stone, restricted by a geological freak to a relatively few places in the world, and the extent to which it has been valued and collected throughout history. He then deals specifically with its place in New Zealand history and folklore from the time of it's first discovery by the Maori to the present day, when the working of it is a growing industry giving scope for skilled artist/craftsmen to create beautiful things.
