Maori Tattoo

Thinking about getting a Maori Tattoo? If you are then it might be a good idea to look into what you're getting first rather than getting a tattoo for its aesthetic beauty. Maori tattoo symbols have become really popular over the last couple of years to the angst of many Maori people in New Zealand. Far too many people are getting these tattoos without doing research into the cultural background of each of the Maori tattoo symbols.

Maori Tattoo Symbols

You may have seen you favorite musician or actor flaunt their latest Maori tattoo on their upper arms. These start may have done research first, after all they have managers who guide them on just about everything in their lives. The reason its so important is twofold, you don't want to offend the Maori culture by getting tattoos which may offend them and you don't want to get a tattoo which means something which doesn't apply to your life.

Cultural Tattoos

Some of these tattoos have serious cultural connotations, some may tell a story while others may say that they are single or that they are a warrior. There are literally thousands of meanings to these tattoos so it would be pretty ridiculous to wear a tattoo which states that you are single and available for a relationship when you're married.

Maori Female Tattoos

Maori tattoo symbols can mean many things so its important to get the right tattoo for you. For instance in the past Maori women were only allowed to be tattooed on a few places and that was their lips, nostrils or their chins. I don't think anyone in the west is going to get any of these areas of their face tattooed today so these tattoos would be pretty rare to say the least. Traditionally, Maori women with full blue lips were thought of as beautiful so it had a significant cultural impact on their society.

Maori Male Tattoos

Maori men on the other hand could get tattooed just about anywhere. They were allowed to have a full facial Moko which just about covered all of the front of the face, again today this type of tattoo would be extremely rare. Traditionally Maori warriors of higher ranks were usually the only ones who could afford such a facial display. Yes, even back then the tattoo artist had to get paid for his work somehow so very few low ranking warriors would have had the resources to pay for such an extravagance.

Cultural Aspect Of The Maori Tattoo

Overall Maori tattoos are very beautiful and have an air of mysticism to them. They can look really well if placed in the right position. Many women choose to get Maori type designs on the lower back while men tend to get them on their upper arm. But the truth is you can just get these tattoos about anywhere on your body but its important to take your time and think before you get inked. Look into the cultural aspect of the tattoo before you choose one. What does it mean? Who wore it in the past? All these questions are very important; after all you don't want to be walking around with a female tattoo when you're a male or vice versa. Take your time when choosing your maori tattoo and everything should turn out fine.
