26.2 is the EASY part it's the Marathon Training Schedule that's going to kick your BUTT!
What kind of MESS have you gotten yourself into. You probably heard about a friend who just completed 26.2 and you are thinking I can do this marathon thing.
You may have even attended an information meeting with "Team N Training" or "Joints in Motion" but now left on your own wondering what "Marathon Training Schedule" am I going to follow.
I am here to help you. There is no real science but the one you pick should be in line with your current level of fitness, your time available to train and most importantly how many days are between now and your marathon.
Hopefully, you have more than less, unless of course, you have already payed your dues with months of training and all you can think is "Bring IT On!"
Running the New York Marathon in 1997 is still one of the highlights of my life. I hope I can provide you a little information to help you experience a similiar high.
So lets take a look at what's the best Marathon Training Schedule for you.
Prerequisite to Picking a Marathon Training Schedule.
Some people might consider this putting the cart before the horse but, its actually more like putting the carrot before the horse.
From 1997 to 2001 I ran 6 marathons. Until I finish the Marine Corps Marathon in October I will have run zero marathons since 2001.
Over the last 6 years I have been a bit frustrated thinking I had lost interest in long distance running, but a funny thing happened. When I signed up for the Marine Corp Marathon in May with basically no training under my belt, I became inspired. You see without the goal of running a marathon out in front of me I had no reason to endure the training.
So before you even start picking a marathon training schedule, be sure you get yourself signed up for a marathon.
The gap between your goal and your current fitness level will act like a rubber band and pull you towards the finish line.
My Picks for books on Marathon Training Schedules
There is no one right method for everyone so research is the key.
Marathon: You Can Do It!
This by far is most popular marathon running guide I have found. A reasonable approach for a beginner.
The Non-Runner's Marathon Trainer
I have not read this one yet but it probably is something like its not about how fast we get there its about the journey. So go ahead if you haven't been running start here and maybe your journey will take you to the finish line.
Hal Higdon's How to Train: The Best Programs, Workouts, And Schedules For Runners Of All Ages
I got to include Hal Higdon. I am not sure who is better known Higdon or Galloway
Runner's World Guide to Road Racing: Run Your First (or Fastest) 5-K, 10-K, Half-Marathon, or Marathon
Runner's World Magazine is a sure way to keep you motivated throughout your training. They have published numerous running books by various authors over the years.
