Marble Collecting

Marbles were originally made by hand. Stone or ivory Marbles can be fashioned by grinding. Clay, pottery, ceramic, or porcelain Marbles can be made by rolling the material into a ball, and then letting dry, or firing, and then can be left natural, painted, or glazed. Glass Marbles can be fashioned through the production of glass rods which are stacked together to form the desired pattern, cutting the rod into marble-sized pieces using marble scissors, and rounding the still-maleable glass wikipedia

We always looked forward to spring in grade school to get to play marbles. Now I wish I had been a collector as well, who would have thought that some marbles would become valuable. Once, an older kid won all my marbles and my sister went and cleaned him out, guess he thought she would be an easy mark too.

My grandson was with me in a local antique store and spotted a bag of marbles for $5. I don't guess he had ever had any so we purchased them and came home and I taught him how to play. It just never occurred to me that he hadn't ever played marbles.

Thanks for stopping by and I know what you mean. I am always surprised when I see kids sitting outside and playing video games and never see them playing marbles.
