Biography
Between 1908-1910 Chagall studied with Leon Bakst in the Zvantseva School of Drawing and Painting. This time had been a difficult one for Chagall; during this period, Jewish occupants were able to reside in St. Petersburg only if they were accompanied by a permit, and the painter was imprisoned for a short time for an infraction of this permit limitation. In spite of being jailed, Chagall stayed on in St. Petersburg up to 1910, and on a regular basis he would visit his hometown where, during 1909, he met a woman named Bella Rosenfeld, who would be his future wife.Once he had gained some fame and repute as a painter, Chagall exited St. Petersburg, relocating to the city of Paris, France, in order to be close to the burgeoning art world. He lived in the Montparnasse area of Paris, and here he develped friendly relationships with such vanguard notables as Guillaume Apollinaire, Robert Delaunay, and Fernand Leger. During 1914 he went back to Vitebsk and a year afterward, wed his fiancee Bella. When he was in Russia, World War I broke out and then in 1916, the Chagalls bore their first child, a girl they called Ida.

Marc Chagall would become an active participant of the Russian Revolution of 1917. Even though the Soviet Ministry of Culture named Chagall a Commissar of Art in the Vitebsk area, where he established Vitebsk Museum of Modern Art as well as an art school, he did not get along easily politically with the Soviet organization. He and his wife relocated to Moscow during 1920 and three years later returned to Paris in 1923. At this time Chagall released his memoirs written in the Yiddish language. To begin with his memoirs had been composed in Russian and later interpreted into French by Bella. He likewise published articles, poetry as well as memoirs in Yiddish, such articles had been released primarily in newspapers and they were only published in book form posthumously. Chagall would become a French citizen during 1937.With France being under Nazi occupancy in World War II, as well as the Jews being in exile, the Chagalls took flight from Paris, searching for refuge in Villa Air-Bel in Marseille. He was a place the family found sanctuary as American writer Varian Fry aided in the Chagall's to escape out of France by traveling first to Spain and then through Portugal. During 1941, the Chagalls were able to finally settled down in America.
On September 2, 1944, Chagall's wife and dearest friend, Bella, the steady topic of his art works and friend of his life, passed away from an unnamed malady. Two years following her death, in 1946, Marc went back to Europe. From 1949 he was painting in Provence, in the South of France. This same year Chagall assisted in the founding of the MRAP anti-racist NGO.

Bride with a Fan - Marc Chagall

The depression Chagall went through after Bella's passing away was eased once he met and began a relationship Virginia Haggard. Together the couple bore a son, David McNeil. During this period, Marc Chagall had obtained heater commissions which helped his financial position, and his painting developed, discovering a liberal and spirited application of color. Chagalls art works of this era are committed to love and the delight for life, with curving, sinuous forms. He likewise started to create pieces in sculpture, ceramics and also stained glass.During 1950 he started trying out graphic mediums. Having met Fernand Mourlot, Chagall frequently called in Mourlot Studios where he created approximately a thousand various lithographic prints. Accompanied by the aide of Charles Sorlier, a master pressman employed with Mourlot, Marc passed the next thirty years searching and experimenting with the graphic medium to find that which most imparts itself to color symbolism. Charles Sorlier would become among his dearest friends, helper and counselor up to the date of his death.
Chagall was remarried during 1952 to Valentina Brodsky Vava. He took numerous trips to Greece, and as well as went to Israel during 1957. During 1960 he produced stained glass windows for a synagogue of the Hadassah Ein Kerem infirmary in Jerusalem, in 1966 he created a wall painting for the fledgling parliament which was being built in the city.
Over the Six Day War the hospital was under gravely assaulted, and attack which Chagall's art under the threat of being destroyed by war. In answer to this situation Marc Chagall penned a letter out of France expressing "I am not worried about the windows, only about the safety of Israel. Let Israel be safe and I will make you lovelier windows.". Fortunately, much of the panels were taken out in time, with just a single panel having met with grievous harm. Israel published a set of stamps in in1973 boasting the Chagall windows. The stamps portray Twelve tribes such as Levi.
Marc Chagall passed away at Saint-Paul de Vence at the French Riviera at the age of ninety-seven on March 28, 1985, where he was also buried.
