Pi Day, a day to celebrate pi on March 14th.

Yes you read it right, there's a celebration on March 14, known as Pi Day...no, not the kind of pie you eat, but the kind of Pi that is a mathematical constant. Nerds use it, bees use it, even birds up in the trees....no, no that's not right! Let's begin again...have you heard the old saying, "Pi are squared," and you always wanted to say, "No, pie are round?" Well, join the club, because that's the way I always looked at it too. Mathematics, as anyone who knows me can tell you, is not my strong suit. But the mathematical formula for squaring a number can be repeated ad infinitum and is a very important thing to scientists, physicists, engineers and well...nerds. I promise this is not going to be a mathematics lesson, because there's no way I would understand it enough to explain it. Let's just say it's a fun holiday and celebration for lots of wonderful people we know, and I've put together some things they might like in the spaces below.

Pi Day was created in 1988 by physicist Larry Shaw at the San Francisco Exploratorium. Congress made it official on March 11, 2009 and it has now become an international celebration. Pi Day is always on March 14, because those are the three numbers (314) most important to this mathematical constant. The day was created to focus more attention on the study of mathematics.

Here's a puzzling photo: a pie of Pi, or a pi of pie created at Delftt University. In any case, this photo has been released into the public domain by its author, GJ_on_Wiki at the English Wikipedia project. This applies worldwide.

What do you know about pi?

Do you understand the theory and formula for pi?

Loading

Yes I do because I learned about it in school.

quester says:

who really understands the meaning of pi - I mean, a number without an end. . . LOL

JaguarJulie says:

Holy smokes, indeed I do understand pi and much that is analytical.

goo2eyes says:

yes, i am familiar with pi bec. we learned about it in high school.

Pastiche says:

Yes, I do ... and I used it just last fall to figure out circumference for a paper mache project.

flipflopju says:

I do but it's been a long time.

No because I couldn't understand it in school.

Celebrate Pi Day? What do you think?

Are you celelbrating Pi Day on March 14th?

Loading

Yes I am with some special Pi activities.

JaguarJulie says:

Hmmm ... I'm thinking perhaps I will start to work on my income taxes today! YAY.

Pastiche says:

Oh yeah. But I'm leaving the old slide rule in storage.

No I'm not celebrating it.

rickmac says:

I didn't but I think we should all start baking pies on pi day so I feel it in my gut. :}

Pastiche says:

Not this year. I'm looking for Pi Day lenses instead of celebrating!

goo2eyes says:

it's just another day but i am aware of it.

I enjoy my visit, my answer to what do you know about Pi was No. Because it was not taught in the 1940-50 era, my children were school in the 1960-70's I do not remember this Pi thing at all, only heard it today on Squidoo. But be interested to learn. Blessed

I am thankful to be mathematically inclined, thanks to my father who worked with me as a young child ... with the slide rule and sign and cosign and other things mathematical. I know he worked PI in there too. So happy to see another gal into PI and pie!
