A Former NICU Parent Offers Tips to Survive Your NICU Experience

This lens was created to help parents survive in the NICU after they have gotten past the initial shock period, covered in the first lens My Baby's in the NICU: Now What? The focus of this lens is on the later phases of the NICU experience--the next few weeks or months--the time when most parents find that they need and want more information to become an active participant in their baby's care.

The lenses in the NICU Parent Support Site Series are being developed to inform, support and encourage current NICU Parents--those whose newborn babies have been hospitalized in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Purchasing NICU products recommended through this lens also benefits the March of Dimes NICU Family Support Program.

Surviving in the NICU - The Next Chapter

What do I do now that the initial shock has worn off?

After NICU parents have gotten through the initial shock period and figured out how to get around the NICU, most parents and family members discover they have many, many questions:

  • What does my baby's diagnosis mean?

  • What does all of this equipment do?

  • How do I talk to the doctors and nurses?

  • What are they talking about (definitions)?

  • What can I do to help my NICU baby?

  • How do I explain a NICU Baby to their brother or sister?

And the question they should be asking but often don't:
  • What can I do to support myself during this challenging time, so I can be strong for my baby?

Finally, the one question that no parent wants to ask:
  • What do I do now that my baby is dying?

Links to helpful resources for answering each of these questions are provided below.
