Saving Babies from Premature Birth

As part of a national effort to save babies from premature birth the March of Dimes has designated November as Prematurity Awareness Month. The month of November is dedicated to raising awareness about premature births, while also raising funds for the March of Dimes.

Why the Concern about Premature Births?
More than half a million babies are born too early each year. Premature birth is the number one killer of newborns. Those premature babies who do survive are often disabled for life.

The March of Dimes is leading the fight to defeat prematurity with a multiyear, multimillion-dollar national campaign to help the nation reduce the rate of premature births.

Their goal is to reduce the rate of premature births from 12.1 percent in 2002 to the national Healthy People 2010 objective of no more than 7.6 percent.

Fight for Preemies

Our mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. We carry out this mission through research, community services, education and advocacy to save babies' lives. March of Dimes researchers, volunteers, educators, outreach workers and advocates work together to give all babies a fighting chance against the threats to their health: prematurity, birth defects, low birthweight.
