Beat March Madness With March Trivia Facts

March is not a popular month. After all, it doesn't have any of the really big holidays in it and it often has a bad reputation for driving people to drink or outright madness. And of course Shakespeare prophecies death to Caesar and warns "Beware the Ides of March!"

I admit when I lived in the frozen north I was not very fond of the month either. It was nearing the end of the interminable winter but spring still seemed so far away and Thalassa Crusso's view is very apt:

"March is a month of considerable frustration - it is so near spring and yet across a great deal of the country the weather is still so violent and changeable that outdoor activity in our yards seems light years away." - Thalassa Cruso

However, now that I live further south March brings with it the promise of spring and you can feel the weather change and watch the earth green up. Maybe March is not my favorite month but I've learned to tolerate it and accept it. I view it much more as Emily Dickinson does:

"March is the month of expectation,
The things we do not know,
The Persons of Prognostication
Are coming now."
- Emily Dickinson, XLVIII

Of course here in Kentucky -- where March Madness reaches epidemic proportions -- March is always a "month of expectation" which frequently leads to "a month of considerable frustration."

Whatever your view of the month of March I am sure that learning some fun March trivia facts and answers some fun March trivia questions will improve your mood. After all, who doesn't enjoy fun trivia questions and answers?

Marching Along Trivia

National Pig day

  • In England, until the Gregorian calendar was adopted in 1752, March was considered the first month with the legal year beginning on March 25.

  • March 1 is National Pig Day. It was started by Texas art teacher Ellen Stanley in 1972 to honor and give thanks to our most intelligent domesticated creature.

  • March 1, St. David's Day, is the national day of Wales. St. David was the founder and first abbot-bishop of Menevia, now St. David's in Dyfed, South Wales. The day is commemorated by the wearing of daffodils or leeks. Both plants are traditionally regarded as national emblems.

  • The third week of March is Brain Awareness Week in support of brain disease and research.

When March Went Mad

The Game That Transformed Basketball

On March 26, 1979, basketball as we know it was born. The NCAA championship game played that day launched an epic rivalry between two exceptional players: Earvin "Magic" Johnson and Larry Bird. Though they played each other only once as college athletes, that game transformed the NCAA tournament into a multibillion-dollar enterprise and laid the foundation for the resurgence of the NBA. To this day it remains the highest-rated basketball game, college or pro, in the history of television.

In the national bestseller When March Went Mad, Seth Davis recounts the dramatic story of the season leading up to that game, as Johnson's Michigan State Spartans and Bird's Indiana State Sycamores overcame long odds and great doubts to reach the game's grandest stage. Davis also tells the stories of their remarkable coaches, Jud Heathcote and Bill Hodges, and he shows how tensions over race and class heightened the drama of the competition.

National Bubble Week

  • As legend has it, noodles were first made by 13th century German bakers who fashioned dough into symbolic shapes, such as words, birds and stars. These "nudels" were then baked and served as bread. March national noodle month.

  • One of the most important Roman deities, Mars was regarded as the father of the Roman people because he was the father of Romulus, the legendary founder of Rome. Although his original nature and functions are obscure, Mars was identified by the Romans with the Greek god of war, Ares. The month of March was named for Mars.

  • The last full week in March is traditionally "National Bubble Week," the week for kids of all ages to celebrate the fun and enchantment of bubbles. The first-ever Bubble Week was in 2000 and was initiated by Oddzon, makers of Koosh Bubbles. The event was created to herald the first day of spring - the unspoken first day of the bubble-blowing season.
