The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of SEAL Team 10
This audio book is a gruelling account of four heroic SEALs fight: Lone Survivor - Marcus Luttrell - MP3 audio bookIn June 2005, four U.S. Navy SEALs left their base in Afghanistan for the Pakistani border. Their mission was to capture or kill a notorious al Qaeda leader. Less then twenty-four hours later, only one of those Navy SEALs remained alive.
This is the story of how team leader Marcus Luttrell, the sole survivor of Operation Redwing, and the desperate battle that led to the largest loss of life in Navy SEAL history. More than anything this is the story of how his teammates stood beside him until he was the last one left; blasted unconscious by a rocket grenade, blown over a cliff, but still armed and breathing.
Over the next four days, badly injured and presumed dead, Luttrell fought off six al Qaeda assassins who were sent to finish him, then crawled for seven miles through the mountains before he was taken in by a Pashtun tribe, who risked everything to protect him from the Taliban.
In this moving chronicle of courage Marcus Luttrell delivers one of the most powerful narratives ever written about modern warfare-as a tribute to his teammates, who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

Marcus Luttrell Timeline - Marcus Luttrell Life
Luttrell joined the United States Navy in March of 1999. Marcus Lutrell began Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training with Class 226 in Coronado, California. Luttrell graduated with Class 228 after suffering a fractured femur early in his training. He had a difficult time working with his other teamates carrying boats and telephone poles because of his large size; he is 6 foot 5. After serving in Baghdad, he was deployed to Afghanistan in the Spring of 2005.
Marcus Luttrell (born November 7, 1975) is a former Petty Officer First ClassMarcus Luttrell | NavySEALs.com - Experience the SEAL Edge (pay grade E6) and United States Navy SEAL. He received the Navy Cross for his actions in 2005 facing Taliban fighters during Operation Red Wing.
Marcus Luttrell Lone Survivor- the printed book
Luttrell opted to spare the Afghanis' lives. About an hour later, the Taliban launched an attack that claimed nearly a hundred of their own men but also the lives of all the SEALs except Luttrell, who was left wounded.
Not long after that, the Taliban shot down an American rescue helicopter, killing all 16 men on board. Luttrell is sure that the three Afghanis he let go turned around and betrayed the SEALs.
But if nothing is fair in war, neither is anything foreordained. Luttrell was found by other Afghanis, one of whom claimed to be his village's doctor. Once again, Luttrell had to rely on his instincts. "There was something about him," Luttrell writes. "By now I'd seen a whole lot of Taliban warriors, and he looked nothing like any of them. There was no arrogance, no hatred in his eyes." Luttrell trusted the man and his colleagues, who took him back to their village, where the law of hospitality -- "strictly nonnegotiable" -- took hold. "They were committed to defend me against the Taliban," Luttrell writes, "until there was no one left alive."
The law held, and Luttrell survived, returned home and received the Navy Cross for combat heroism from President Bush. -- (Washington Post)
Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of SEAL Team 10
Absolutely Unimaginable... This book takes you inside the Navy SEALs training program in Coronado. You are with Marcus Luttrell throughout BUD/S and Hell Week. You fly with him and his teammates in a C-130 to the Hindu Kush, where the hunt begins for bin Laden's right-hand man. But then it all goes terribly wrong, up there in the mountains of Afghanistan.
This book, written by Patrick Robinson, reads like a fast-paced thriller, told in Marcus's understated voice. It is a rivetting, important, sad story of lost friends, valor, courage and the intricacies of modern war. It is an important book, destined to become an American classic. -- Jengo "Jengo" (LONDON)
ROE costs American Lives - Let me start by saying, even though I'm well past my prime, I'm a big, tough guy. I've been in more than my share of rough situations. What I'm trying to say here is, it's not easy to get me to water up. But this book had me sobbing before I even finished the introduction. Unless you're just absolute pond scum that has no compassion whatsoever for our military, be forewarned this book will definitely have you wiping your eyes more than a few times.
Author Patrick Robinson conveys Petty Officer Luttrell's story magnificently. He is to be commended. You will flip through these pages in a day or two and be unable to put this one down.
I'm not going to spend much time on the story itself. Just read the book. You'll not find many more graphic descriptions of such things as an almost incomprehensible training regimen, the unique brotherhood that develops among men who have trained and fought together (particularly special forces), courage under fire and an incredible network of support for a fallen loved one.
You will have a plethora of personal emotions exposed. For me, I think what drove hardest upon my psyche is the intense hatred I feel after reading this book, not of the Taliban and Al Queda (although they rank right up there in the I freakin' hate your guts department), but rather of two entities right here in America; the National media and the U.S. Congress. This mission cost us twenty-three of our very finest, and those two entities are directly responsible for their deaths and countless others. They should all have their ROE shoved right up their backsides.
Not since our government disbanded the great American military fighting force of WWII in 1945 have they given the military the support needed to win wars. Sure they've provided the proper equipment and training, but then they have sent our troops into battle time after time with their hands tied behind their backs. The guys in Korea got a taste of it. We damned sure got plenty of it in Nam. They sort of allowed the guys in Gulf War I to do their job, but now, it's just over the top.
And then you've got the piece of [...] news media. 98% of those pukes ought to be ,.... Well, okay, I'm ranting now and not reviewing, so let me get a grip. In war there is always an army defending freedom and an army seeking to destroy freedom. Whichever army wins will determine the difference between freedom and slavery for that nation. It's obvious which side many in the news media and in Washington D.C. are pulling for.
Marcus Luttrell is a true American hero. As are his fallen team members. I am thankful Marcus is a U.S. Navy Seal. I am thankful he decided to make this story known. I am thankful to my grandchildren for giving me this book for Father's Day. I have several new names and families to hold in my prayers. -- Monty Rainey (New Braunfels, TX United States)

Operation Red Wing was a counter-insurgent mission in Kunar province, Afghanistan, involving four members of the United States Navy SEALs, which took place on June 28, 2005.
Three of the SEALs were killed during the initial operation, as were other American Special Operations soldiers (SEAL's and Nightstalker pilots) whose helicopter was shot down while flying to provide support and rescue to the team.
Marcus Luttrell, the only surviving American soldier, was protected by local villagers who sent an emissary to the closest military base allowing a rescue team to locate the wounded SEAL.
Ahmad Shah (Taliban) alias Mohammad Ismail - Target of Operation Red Wing
Ahmad Shah (nom de guerre Mohammad Ismail, aka "Sharmak" by Marcus Luttrell) (1970-2008) was a high-ranking Taliban leader who commanded a group of insurgents known as the "Mountain Tigers".p. 145-146 - They were responsible for killings in eastern Afghanistan and the Hindu-Kush mountains.
The target for Operation Red Wing, Mohammad Ismail, survived the American operation but was killed during a blazing shootout with Pakistani police in the North-West Frontier Province in April 2008. His most famous battle was when his unit of around 150 men killed a total of 19 U.S. Special Operations operators. This included three of the four SEALs in Operation Red Wing and an additional eight SEALs along with eight Army "Nightstalker" Commandos who died when their MH-47 helicopter was shot down during the attempted rescue of the four Navy SEALs who started the Red Wing mission. Marcus Luttrell was the only survivor.
160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment - The Rescue Helicopter Team

They were sent out to look for Luttrell after Operation Red Wing, which he was undertaking with three other SEALs, went horribly awry after their presence was revealed to the Taliban by goat herders.
The 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne) is a special operations unit of the United States Army that provides helicopter aviation support for general purpose forces and Special Operations Forces. Its missions have included attack, assault, and reconnaissance, and are usually conducted at night, at high speeds, low altitudes, and on short notice.
