Mardi Gras Coloring Sheets

History of The Mardi Gras Colors

Mardi Gras, also known as Fat Tuesday, is a carnival celebration where everyone dresses up in whimsical costumes and masks preparing for the start of the Lenten season. The celebration is approximately two weeks in length going through Fat Tuesday which is the day before Ash Wednesday.

There were specific colors selected for the Mardi Gras celebration that were chosen in 1872 by a group of businessmen, who invented a King of the Carnival, called Rex, to lead the first daytime parade. The three parade colors selected were:

Purple - representing Justice

Green - representing Faith

Gold - representing Power

At that time, they also introduced the Mardi Gras Song and Flag that are still being flown and sung to this day!
