Mobile Mardi Gras

Long before Mobile was part of the State of Alabama,it was the first capital of French Louisiana. Mobile held the first organized Mardi Gras event in 1703,fifteen years before New Orleans was founded. The first recorded Louisiana Mardi Gras celebration was held in 1699 at the mouth of the Mississippi River in what is now Plaquemines Parrish,LA. This makes Mobile's Mardi Gras the oldest continually celebrated Carnival season in North America.

Mardi Gras Beads Decorating A Tree

Mardi Gras Tree

Mardi Gras beads are thrown to parade watchers from floats and sometimes people will go to extreme measures to get them. I can imagine a scene like this in New Orleans or Mobile a few days after Fat Tuesday.

Fat Tuesday Fun Fact

Mardi Gras is also known as Fat Tuesday and Shrove Tuesday. It is traditional to eat pancakes doughnuts, and other fried foods on this day. The idea is to use up all the sugar and fat in the house before the fasting season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday.

Carnaval Cuba Vintage Travel Poster

Fiestas Habana 1937

Before Fidel Castro took power in 1959 many Americans traveled to Havana to celebrate Carnaval.Cuba had long celebrated a Carnaval season in the summer but by the 20th Century French and American influences made Havana something of a hotspot for the traditional Mardi Gras season.

Since Fat Tuesday is a Christian holiday and Communists aren't big on religion, Cuba doesn't celebrate the Mardi Gras season any longer. Carnaval continues to be celebrated elsewhere in the Caribbean, though.
