About Margaret Thatcher

Margaret ThatcherMargaret Hilda Thatcher, Baroness Thatcher, born 13 October 1925) served as British Prime Minister from 1979 to 1990 and leader of the Conservative Party from 1975 until 1990, being the first (and, to date, only) woman to hold either post. Thatcher is still the longest-serving British Prime Minister since Lord Salisbury and had the longest continuous period in office since Lord Liverpool who was prime minister in the early 19th century. She was the first woman to lead a major political party in the UK, and the first of only three women to have held any of the four great offices of state. She currently has a life peerage as Baroness Thatcher, of Kesteven in the County of Lincolnshire, which allows her to sit in the House of Lords. For more, see Wikipedia, Margaret Thatcher.

I grew up in England during the Thatcher Years. Then when I studied law at University we spent a lot of time studying her policies and how she changed the face of Britain. Certainly a larger than life figure.

I'm conflicted. She saved the British economy and kept us at the top tables of world politics instead of continuing the slide into insignificance that had begun with the collapse of the empire, but she is also the woman who said "there is no such thing as society", and then proceeded to do her very best to make this true by destroying society.
On a comedic level she is also the only person (to my knowledge) other than the monarch ever to have used 'the royal we', when she announced to the country that "we have become a grandmother" (as if we had collectively had a grandchild). In summary I think that she was an arrogant evil witch, and we (the British) should all love her because she was also our saviour.
