How to salt a margarita glass to make a Margarita Recipe
26/11/09
I consider the most important step to make divine Margaritas is salting the glass. The salty flavor complements the flavors of the margarita recipe, and the light crunch can provide a pleasant sensation.I actually prefer to mix salt and sugar half and half, so it's not so salty. And if you're worried about sugar, then consider using Stevia extract as a substitute for the sugar. But my favorite is a Margarita Rimmer by Stirrings, such as Mango Rimmers!
If you want to know how to salt a margarita glass the traditional way, here it is....
Do not use plain Salt - it will actually give your margarita a taste which is too salty.
Always choose a coarse grind salt such as kosher salt, Seal Salt or a Margarita Salt made specifically for margaritas. The coarseness also adds texture and creates a stunning looking rim. However, some bartenders will mix salt 50/50 with sugar as well, to give the rim a sweeter taste.
To rim the glasses, there are two ways to do it... and the secret is in using lemons or limes instead of water. The traditional way to do it is with limes, but you can use lemons if you are in a pinch.
The first way is to cut a piece of lime and rub it along the rim of the glass. Alternatively, you can dip the rim in a small amount of lime juice on a large enough saucer or plate to be able to dip the entire rim at once.
Next comes the salt (or salt/sugar) dipping. On a saucer or plate large enough for the entire rim to be dipped at once, pour enough salt so it is about 1/8 to 1/4 inch deep. Then dip the rim on, twirling around so the salt sticks on the entire rim. Then fill with the margarita of choice and serve!
Tequila, the primary alcohol in a margarita, pairs very well with salt and lime. Served without salt, the Margarita Recipe suffers.
You can purchase a Margarita rimmer set or purchase your salt in a tin, so that you can use the tin for mess proof salting.
Make your own Margarita Recipe Rimmer
01/11/09
Margaritas in the Summer are appealing with the salt around the rim. The salt helps your body maintain water at a time when the alcohol from the Tequila is depleting your system of water. The Salt with the Tequila is a good counter-balance, as long as it's not too much salt, or too many Margaritas for that matter! While there are many varieties of Salt Rimmers i.e. Stirrings Rimmers, you can concoct your own.
I bought Country Time Lemon powder crystals in the 10 pack box and added this to Rock Salt in equal parts and it was quite good; maybe not as good as Stirrings, but good and needless to say, cheaper!
Mango Rimmers by Stirrings is my favorite, so I will continue to hunt for the more exotic flavors in powder form to add to my Margarita Rimmers.
A good Margarita Recipe includes a delicious Rimmer!
Limoncello Margarita Recipe
29/08/09

The Best Margarita Recipe Ever
* Two parts tequila (good tequila is always better...)
* Half part Grand Marnier (this is a critical part... trust me, don't go cheap on the citrus liqueur. Cointreau also goes very well, but really doesn't have the same aromatic flavor that Grand Marnier has; try them side-by-side; they have totally different flavors... if you cheat here with Triple Sec or Orange Curaçao, you must add a dash of orange bitters!)

Juice of 1/4 orange
Splash Campari
Put tequila, Cointreau, and juice in a shaker with ice. Shake to combine. Pour into chilled cocktail glass (strain if you dislike pulp). Pour Campari over the back of a spoon, let settle.
This variation was very nice. The first half of the drink is sweet from the juice and Cointreau, and spicy from the tequila. As you drink, you slip into the tangy/bitter half, and finish wanting another.
