Loss Informed Writer's Work

When she was 7 years old, Margery Williams lost her beloved father who died suddenly yet gave her the passion for reading and writing that sustained her throughout her life.

Williams transformed loss into literature and wrote about the mutability that shapes our lives. We pay a heavy price in heartache and loss in our bid to become authentic.

In her classic children's story, The Velveteen Rabbit or How Toys Become Real, Williams spotlights the Skin Horse as mentor to the Velveteen Rabbit, whose human set the soft bunny aside in favor of jazzier toys. The older toy used to have hair but he had loved so much that the fur rubbed off. And so he inspires with acceptance of his plight and his kindness to even undeserving toys. The Skin Horse chooses to love.

Similarly, by the time we humans become real, we've lost our hair and become rather disheveled. Let's hope that, like the Velveteen Rabbit, we reach our twilight years shedding real tears and smiling authentic smiles. Most of all, that we choose love.

The Velveteen Rabbit

By Margery Williams

A stuffed toy rabbit (with real thread whiskers) comes to life in Margery Williams's timeless tale of the transformative power of love. Given as a Christmas gift to a young boy, the Velveteen Rabbit lives in the nursery with all of the other toys, waiting for the day when the Boy (as he is called) will choose him as a playmate. In time, the shy Rabbit befriends the tattered Skin Horse, the wisest resident of the nursery, who reveals the goal of all nursery toys: to be made "real" through the love of a human. "'Real isn't how you are made,' said the Skin Horse. 'It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.'"

it's interesting knowing the background about the author's life, and how it may have shaped her writing. I've featured this as "More About the Author" on my Velveteen Rabbit lens. You're right -- the two lenses are closely related.

out of all teh books I read to my kids, this by far is my personal favorite, but it is in a way a sad story with a beautiful ending.
  • louiswery Oct 1, 2010 @ 11:11 am | delete
I find the story resonating even more as I grow older. Sad yet comforting. Thank you for commenting.

We are fans of the Velveteen Rabbit story here, so we often say that something is "real" when it's very love-worn.
  • louiswery Sep 17, 2010 @ 6:33 am | delete
We grew up on this story, too. I like your word "love-worn." That's a much better attribute than "worn out"! Thank you for commenting.
