Margot Van Voorhies Carr was an American artist who moved to Mexico in 1937. She soon met and married Antonio Castillo, one of the owners of Los Castillo silver. Her husband encouraged her to begin designing silver jewelry in his shop under the professional name of Margot de Taxco.

When Antonio and Margot divorced in 1948 she opened her own sliver shop and storefront. Her business cards for her new venture read "As Stars Are to the Night, So Are Jewels to the Woman." She attracted many Hollywood celebrities of the day, John Wayne and Lana Turner, to name a few. A number of other wealthy Americans visited her shop regularly to purchase silver jewelry.
