There was alot of negative press for the Mariah Carey video of "Loverboy" and the relative lack of success compared to her previous efforts. The retro charm of "Cameo" and the over the top fun of the album was a couple years ahead of the trend of the mainstream by a few years to best capitalize on it.
Mariah may have sold less then previous efforts but she remained one of America's most popular artists and consider how many she out sold during that time. Fans of this outing were far from a niche fan base and her fun style was appreciated by the Urban community. Sorry middle America she wasn't playing to your bland and acceptable tastes. Now that America has caught up with Mariah her sales have been through the roof and we can look back fondly on her fun Video "Loverboy" in a new fresh light.
