Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary is universal within Catholic history and traditions.  May Processions, the Rosary, novenas, the Litany of the Blessed Virgin and candles in front of Our Lady's Statue are all practices which Catholics have shared for centuries. Apparitions have taken place in many places in the world and shrines built to commemorate them. This lens is about some of these practices, places and their history.

Mary Gardens

I love the concept of dedicating an entire garden or even just a portion to Mary and using flowers that honor her or her attributes. The medievalist in me fell in love with the site on Mary gardens in the link list. Flowers and herbs were named for the Virgin, linked to her, grown in her honor and used in healing potions. Since much of life in the medieval world pointed to heaven and the journey of the soul to its heavenly destination, it is no surprise that gardens, plants and especially flowers came to be so symbolic.

The Mary Garden site has a plant list with over 1,200 names! Something for every garden, in every climate can no doubt be found on this list.

Plant a Mary Garden and have a space for meditation and peace in your own yard. Join with friends and plant a Mary Garden at your church and share a space for healing and peace.

May is Mary's Month

When I was growing up May processions were very much a part of our church celebrations. Usually the children who had just made First Communion would process, the girls in their white dresses and veils carrying flowers to lay at the feet of the statue of Mary. Often one girl would have been chosen to crown the statue with a crown of flowers.

At my Catholic girls' high school we had a beautiful, large outdoor statue and the seniors in their white graduation robes carried out the tradition of the May procession with one girl climbing a ladder to place the crown of white flowers on the head of the statue. Everyone who attended sang Marian hymns and prayed the Rosary together.

In my childhood, we also had a May altar almost every year. My father made us a little wooden altar (which I still use to display family pictures) and we carefully set it up with a statue of Mary and small vases which we replenished with fresh flowers every day. I remember lilacs, lily of the valley, roses and violets blooming in our small yard. It was easy to keep the flowers fresh. We recited the rosary in the living room where our May altar was displayed for the entire month.

A May altar would be even easier to set up than a Mary garden and if you are looking for a source for hymns please check the Mary Page at the University of Dayton, which is noted in the links section.

After five years in the frozen gray city, this Toledo, Ohio, native was happy to return to California with its more mild climate, where she has remained for over twenty years.

She was "caught by" the polio virus in childhood and has a love of gadgets and assistive (and non-assistive) technology as a result.  Anything that will make life easier is readily embraced--if only the computer could be programmed to cook.

A passionate gardener, former gourmet cook, singer (especially of Gregorian Chant, Renaissance Polyphony and Christmas Carols) she is also a former calligrapher and a life-long photographer.
