Marie Curie Biography

 

Marie Curie (née Maria Sklodowska) was born in Warsaw on November 7, 1867. She died on July 4, 1934 in Sallanche, Savoy, France.

1903 : Won the Nobel Prize in Physics
1911 : Won her second Nobel Prize in Chemistry

She discovered the mysterious element radium. It opened the door to deep changes in the way scientists think about matter and energy. She also led the way to a new era for medical knowledge and the treatment of diseases.

Maria Sklodowska Curie:
Daughter of Polish intellectuals
Worked as a governess before leaving for Paris 1891
Lives with relatives, pursues further studies and changes her first name into Marie
1893 : Received her diploma in physics (with honors)
1894 : Second diploma in mathematics (with honors)
April 1894 : Met the young physicist Pierre Curie (1859-1906)
July 1895 : Pierre and Marie married
1897 : Daughter Irène was born
1895/1898 : Started with her husband her researches on uranium, radioactivity. Found another element which she named "Polonium" (in honor of her homeland Poland)
1900 : First female faculty member at the Ecole Normale Supérieure
1903 : At the Sorbonne she defended her research thesis on analysis of radiation from uranium
1903 : Marie and Pierre curie shared the prestigious Humphrey Davy Medal from England
1904 : Second Daughter Eve was born
1904 : She was allowed to join her husband at the Sorbonne as his research assistant
1906 : Pierre Curie died (killed by a horse-drawn carriage)
1906 : The Sorbonne offered Marie the professorship held by her late husband. Confirmed in 1909
1910 : Declined the award of the Legion of Honor
1914 : Election to the Académie des Sciences
1914/1934 : Till her death of pernicious anemia (caused by years of exposure to radiation)in July 4 1934, she continued her researches together with her daughter Irene and son-in-law Frederic Jolliot Curie
