The Pre-Raphaelite beauty Marie Spartali Stillman was born in Middlesex, daughter of Michael Spartali, import-export merchant and Greek Consul-General. The Anglo-Greek community was an important presence in late Victorian London's intellectual circles and her father's position presented Stillman with many opportunities for introduction into this world.

Marie studied under Ford Madox Brown from 1864-70 and later Dante Gabriel Rossetti for a short time. Both Marie and her sister Christine sat for several artists, including Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Edward Burne-Jones, James Whistler and photographer Julia Margaret Cameron.

Biography

From 1867 Marie Stillman exhibited at the Royal Academy and Dudley Gallery and was a regular contributor to the Grosvenor Gallery as well as galleries in the United States. In 1871 she married the American amateur artist, journalist and writer on the Pre-Raphaelites, William James Stillman who was acting as an American diplomat. Against her family's wishes the couple relocated to Florence then later Rome where they lived until 1878. During this period Stillman continued to exhibit at the Grosvenor Gallery and later at the New Gallery.

Influenced by her time in Italy, most of Marie Stillman's subwjects were literary and historical figures inspired by Dante or Boccacio's Decameron with the occasional flora still life and landscape. Stillman returned to England in 1898 after the death of her husband and settled in Kensington.
