Will Legalized Marijuana Help Reduce Pot Addiction?
Ranked #14,519 in Healthy Living, #227,369 overall
Before we discuss why marijuana should be legalized, we should understand why it was deemed illegal in the first place. In 1930 many newspapers were filled with reports of how marijuana was making people go crazy. There was so much printed about marijuana abuse and marijuana addiction, that people became scared.
During the 1920's and 30's it was reported that many Mormon's visited Mexico and came back with marijuana. Church members saw these people acting out of character and referred to them as acting like a 'crazy Mexican' that they pushed for this drug to be criminalized.
Another revelation that has been brought to our attention was that many paper manufacturers were planning on changing to hemp. The huge timber corporations did not want to lose millions on this and began to influence government members to get marijuana deemed illegal in the United States.

Is Hemp An Alternative To Marijuana?
Making the hemp plant legal in the U.S. would pave the way for more options, especially against the felling of thousands of trees each year. Is There A Downside To Legal Marijuana?
The downside of legalizing marijuana is that many people fear that more people would start smoking marijuana. This may be true, but as seen in the Netherlands, after a while these numbers decrease and become stabilized. The Netherlands makes sure that marijuana is not available for sale near high schools and border crossings. The United States could follow suit and implement the same measures. To ensure that minors have no access to marijuana an ID system would have to be set in place. Similar to the ones used for the sale of cigarettes and alcohol.
There are advantages and disadvantages of legalizing pot, the health risks are high. Do we want to make this drug available to the masses, especially when so many are all ready seeking marijuana addiction treatment? It is a subject up for many debates for years to come.

- Maybe if those people who fear that making it legal will 'get more people to smoke it' were to deal with their own issues [see Codependency] then there's the main issue straight knocked out. I do not smoke pot but that's cause I'm in recovery from so many other issues that to smoke [or drink, or eat] any mind altering thing would have me straight up a tree. BUT. That's my issue and no codependents can have it. Haha! :-)

- I don't think it matters, just like smoking people will do it legal or not.

- I personally think that legalizing marijuana would take some of the allure away from smoking it. Just my two cents. Good lens
