Marilyn Manson: Lest the American Family Forget

a comprehensive guide to every officially released studio recording by Marilyn Manson from Portrait of the American Family to Lest We Forget

Introduction

What's it all about?

Lest the American Family Forget is an original guide for acquiring every officially released studio recording by Marilyn Manson. I have most of these albums in my personal collection and have listened to the rest. I mention this because I have seen several websites which claim that some of these CDs do not exist.

What is not included in this guide:
Live Recordings, bootleg or officially released
Interviews
Guest Artist Recordings

What is included:
Album Tracks
B-Sides
Covers
Soundtrack Recordings
Alternate Mixes
Recalled Versions
Remixes
Acoustic Versions

This guide includes detailed information on how to acquire every officially released studio recording from Portrait of the American Family to Lest We Forget. That's 1994-2004, 2 decades of Marilyn Manson.

A Word of Caution

Many of the non-album tracks can be found on multiple releases, but this guide will tell you how to get all available tracks with the fewest purchases. You will need to be very careful when buying singles that you get the correct version. There are often several releases with the same title, but I will specify the track listing and the exact edition in these cases to avoid confusion.

Whenever possible, I will also provide direct links to make a purchase. Even if following one of my links, be cautious when buying used CDs. The seller may not know about the different editions and may have listed the item incorrectly. It is not out of line to send a message to the seller before buying to confirm that the track listing of the CD is correct.

The Spooky Kids

I am pleased to say that I got my hands on a copy of Lunch Boxes & Choklit Cows with the original artwork and bonus DVD before Mr. Manson's lawsuit pulled it from store shelves. I actually picked it up on a whim while shopping for something else. Lucky me!

As much as Marilyn Manson would like to deny it, Spooky Kids was the beginning of his rise to fame. Although he definitely developed as an artist, I enjoy the early music as well. However, the Spooky Kids are not my focus here. If you are interested in finding out more, I highly recommend that you pay a visit to SpookyKids.net.

As described in Marilyn Manson's book, this album was changed a great deal at the request of the label. However, the original version was mysteriously pressed. Several copies shipped as promotional material before someone who cared caught the "mistake". If you get a chance to hear the recalled version, it is worth your time. There were several major changes, and I found it very enjoyable.

Antichrist Superstar Studio A, New Orleans Demo
This 1 Track demo has the Antichrist Superstar track with the original ending. The ending is the same as the live version on last tour on earth.

The front and back artwork for this album were withdrawn almost immediately when this promo was released due to too much garnered attention. Only the compact discs in plain jewel cases were sent out on future pressings. The writing on the CDs are on the back of white insulating tape and written in black felt tip pen. The song itself has a different ending than "When you are suffering, know that I have betrayed you".

I have heard this extended mix so the demo is not a myth. Whether or not the hand-labeled CDs regularly for on eBay are authentic, I can't say.

*This album was initially released in a limited edition package including a DVD of music videos. If you have the DVD, look for an easter egg video in which Marilyn Manson's corpse undergoes an unusual autopsy. Buyers who purchased this limited edition from Manson's official website also received a bonus DVD containing the video for (s)AINT which was too racy for the record label even with a parental advisory sticker.

Odds & Ends

Tribute CD + Autobiography

We're A Happy Family
This tribute to the Ramones was the brainchild of Rob Zombie and includes Marilyn Manson's unique take on The KKK Took My Baby Away.

The Long Hard Road Out of Hell (1998)
If you've made it this far, you would probably enjoy reading Marilyn Manson's autobiography The Long Hard Road Out of Hell.

Eat Me, Drink Me

2007 Album

Eat Me, Drink Me (2007)
01 If I Was Your Vampire
02 Putting Holes In Happiness
03 The Red Carpet Grave
04 They Said That Hell's Not Hot
05 Just A Car Crash Away
06 Heart-Shaped Glasses (When The Heart Guides The Hand)
07 Evidence
08 Are You The Rabbit?
09 Mutilation Is The Most Sincere Form Of Flattery
10 You And Me And The Devil Makes 3
11 Eat Me, Drink Me

I have not yet gone to the trouble of sorting out the remixes on the various editions of the Heart-Shaped Glasses and Putting Holes In Happiness singles. Frankly, I'm not certain if I will. Eat Me, Drink Me fell a bit flat of my expectations.

Lyrically, the running theme throughout the album is lost love. Musically, Manson is still trying to layer lots of guitars over a percussive backdrop while alternately croaking and screaming his lyrics.

It should be obvious to anyone that I am a huge fan of Manson's musical style, but it just doesn't seem to fit with the emotions he is trying to convey in these songs. Perhaps someone should tell Marilyn that it's OK to not always come across as a badass. If not, perhaps this album should be re-titled It's Hard Being In Love When You're E-e-e-e-e-evil so people know what they are getting into.

I've listened to the album 3 or 4 while times trying my best to keep an open mind. It's not bad, but it is hard to view Eat Me, Drink Me as an improvement on previous work.
