Unit Study for Pacific Coast Marine Biology

Looking for some help in starting a study of marine biology with your children? Not sure where to do or where to get started? I am going to pull together the resources and materials that I found planning our study of marine biology. My boys are in high school but much of the information is absolutely appropriate for younger students.

Marine Biology

We are using Apologia Marine Biology as our basic textbook this year with our high school age boys. If your children are younger, you could use Apologia's Exploring Creation: Swimming Creatures of the Fifth Day.

As a supplement we are using the Marine Biology Coloring Book for our notebooks.

We are going to take several field trips to aquariums and tidepools over the course of the year. We are hoping to go whale watching as well.

Informational Links

We used these links for gathering information for our field trips to the coast and for reports.
Sea Birds
Frequently asked questions and answers.
Pinnipeds-sea lions, seals
This website has a great overview of pinnipeds and then a separate article on each specific mammal.
Sea World Teacher Guides
Make sure to click the "quick links" button and then browse the teacher guide topics. Our favorites are the Sharks and the Sea Lions guides. There are guides for all ages which include lesson plans and great information.
Sea World Animal Info Books
These are fantastic! We are using these a few at a time to study different marine animals. The photos are fantastic.

Tidepooling is a great family activity!

With a little preparation, exploring tidepools can be a great hook for additional study. Once we observed something in its natural setting, our boys were eager to identify it and learn more.

Great Aquariums to Visit on the Pacific Coast

Some Links to Get You Started

Need to increase some interest in your study of marine life? A well-prepared field trip can always build interest.

I always try to check out the aquarium's website before visiting and read the links they provide under the education category.
Oregon Coast Aquarium
We visited this museum just a few weeks ago and it was fantastic! The aquarium displays are gorgeous...a mixture of art and natural beauty.

I printed out the field trip packet and we all completed the pages as we visited the aquarium.

The best part for the boys? The sea otters!
Monterey Bay Aquarium
This is the premier aquarium on the California coast. We love the setting and the layout of this aquarium.

The "backstage" programs are well worth the effort of planning ahead.
Aquarium of the Pacific
This aquarium comes highly recommended by many of my friends and relatives. I have not visited it yet but I plan to before the school year is over.

Other Field Trip ideas

Fitzgerald Marine Reserve
Fantastic opportunity for tidepools!
Ano Nuevo State Natural Reserve
Largest mainland breeding colony in the world for elephant seals.

Video of the Oregon Coast Aquarium

Oregon Coast Aquarium

The Oregon Coast Aquarium is nestled on beautiful Yaquina Bay, south of the majestic arch bridge that spans the bay in Newport. The Aquarium showcases the beauty and diversity of Oregon's coast including sharks, sea lions, sea otters, a giant pacific octopus and one of the largest marine aviaries in North America. The Aquarium is rated among the top 10 aquariums in the nation by USA Today and Coastal Living Magazine. Experience the extraordinary as you enter Passages of the Deep and realize you are completely surrounded by sharks, rays and thousands of other fish in the underwater tunnel. Spirit Magazine called Passages of the Deep "the coolest 50 yards on the Oregon Coast!"
