Iiiiiitttttttsssssaaaaaaaaaaaa Meeeeeeeeee Mario!

Ok. So it's obviously not. It must be the Mario Kart fever taking hold again. Yes, It's that time again. With a new console comes a new Mario Kart and this may just be the best one yet!

I'll start with a story. I have a friend that used to always laugh at me because when I play racing games I tilt from side to side as if I was in a F1 car...

He will probably still laugh at me but now i'll easily beat him at Mario Kart Wii because to play, you have to do just that. Tilt!

I will admit I was skeptical about how well the "Wii Wheel" would work but it works perfectly. Turn the wheel just like you were driving a car to turn your vehicle.

And yes... That said "vehicle". Not "kart". Mario Kart Wii brings with it new choices. Namely bikes!

The graphics are better than any game out for Wii yet. Possibly, barring The Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess.

And as for game play Nintendo have stuck to the tried and tested formula of:

Characters & Karts & Weapons = Another Legendary Mario Kart Game

I'm prepared to say that this may just be the best Mario Kart yet!

First up, the basics:

  • This is the 6th instalment of the Mario Kart series (not including the 2 arcade versions).

  • There are 32 tracks. (Not including mirror tracks) 16 old, 16 new.

  • There are 25 playable characters. (Including your own mii!)

  • Tricks have now been included. (More on those later)

  • The number of racers per race has been increased from 8 to 12.

  • Also comes with a "Wii Wheel"!

  • New items; POW block, Thundercloud and Mega Mushroom.

Green Shell - Fire these infront or behind in a straight line to flip a vehicle they hit.

Triple Green Shell - 3 Green Shells. These can spin around the user.

Red Shell - The red variety of shell can be used to home in on the vehicle infront of the user. Isn't effective at hitting vehicles behind you.

Triple Red Shell - 3 Red Shells. Very useful for catching up 2 or 3 places.

Spiny Blue Shell - Homes in on the leader and hits them. Can catch other vehicles in a large blast radius.

Dash Mushroom - Gives the user a temporary speed boost.

Tips

How To Become A Pro...

Rocket Start - Hold accelerate at the mid-point between the 2 and 1 in the pre-race countdown.

Tricks - Flick the Wii Wheel upwards to perform a trick and you will get a boost when you land. Do this at every opportunity! (It could mean the difference between 1st and 2nd.)

Drop Boost - If you go off the track, don't worry. When Lakitu drops you back on the track, hit accelerate as your kart hits the floor. This is difficult to master but very useful if you can.

Spiny Blue Shell - If you're leading and this is after you, slow down and allow 2nd place to catch up. They may get caught in the blast as they pass.

Bob-Omb - Don't drop them behind you if someone is very close to you because if it hits them, it's likely you will get caught in the blast radius. Try to drop these in enclosed spaces.

Drifting - Choose manual drift. It may be more difficult but you get a bigger turbo.

Bikes - Take time to learn the ropes with these. They are much harder to control than karts!

Wheelies - Wheelies can only be performed on bikes and should be performed with care. By tilting the wheel back (as if you were doing a trick) our character will pull a wheelie. This gives you more speed whilst in the wheelie but it's hard to turn. Only use a wheelie on a straight.

Slipstreaming - Slipstreaming is perfect for bursting past someone on a straight. Just drive in behind them and your vehicle will start to have a blue air stream around it, stay behind them and you'll be able to catapult past them. Remember to look out for them throwing items behind them though!

Course Specific Hints

Watch Out For These!

Mushroom Gorge - Look out on the giant mushrooms. It's too easy to bounce off the edge and the green ones don't make you bounce.

Moo Moo Meadows - Avoid the cows at all costs!

Coconut Mall - Drive up the "up escalators" and don't go up the "down escalators". You'll lose time trying to struggle in the opposite direction.

Koopa Cape - Try and stay in the stream of water when the course becomes a river and in the tunnel later on. You'll maintain a higher speed whilst in the water.

Maple Treeway - The only things are try not to hit Wiggler or fall off the edge.

Grumble Volcano - If the ground starts to crack... Move Away! It quickly breaks off and you sink into the lava. Also, look out for fireballs, firesnakes and lava fountains! (Not much then! =/)

Dry Dry Ruins - In the ruins the there is more sand as the race goes on, look out for this. Also look out for falling pillars near on the first lap. You can use these to jump and do a trick later on though.

Moonview Highway - Cars! Cars! Cars!

Bowser Castle - Look out for lava fountains and a statue of Bowser firing enormous fireballs straight down the centre of the track!

Rainbow Road - Mind the edge!

Shy Guy Beach (GBA) - Look out for the mines being fired by the ships in the background. It may look good but you won't think so if one blows up next to you.

Track Short-Cuts

For Those Who Know The Open Road Isn't Always The Quickest...

Luigi Circuit - Near the end of the track, on your left hand side in the sand, is a ramp. Mushroom boost over to it and trick off it to get a landing boost then power slide over the boost pads to get a speedy finish.

Mushroom Gorge - At the start of the track you are faced with the choice of bounce on the mushrooms or drive on the ground. This is totally up to you but, contrary to the belief the mushrooms are quicker, there is no real value in either. It's down to personal preference.

Mario Circuit - On the left hand side, just before the Chain Chomp there is a boost ramp. Trick off this and you'll land near the tunnel.

Moonview Highway - On the right hand side there is a short-cut over the hill. Keep a look out as you drive near the start of the course. It's easily spotted by looking for tyre tracks up the side of the cliff face.

Peach Beach (GCN) - In Grand Prix mode you should always take the left hand path when faced with the water in the middle of the course. This gives you a good advantage over the CPU if you use the boost pad and trick off the top of it.

Yoshi Falls (DS) - Driving through the waterfalls may be dangerous...but it's much quicker. I think it's the difference of 2 seconds a lap at least. This is a must learn short-cut!

Mario Raceway (N64) - If you have mushrooms to spare you can boost straight over the top of the hill a couple of corners from the start. There is also a ramp later on, similiar to the one on Luigi Circuit, mushroom boost to it and trick off the top.

Shy Guy Beach (GBA) - Near the end of the course keep to the left hand side. All CPU will go to the right but if you stick to the left you will have a clear run to the flag.

Delfino Square (DS) - After you cross the first bridge (near the docks) there is a sharp turn through a little alley. Use this if you have a speed boost (mushroom, star etc.) because the mud will slow you down without but it's a great short-cut for those with the speed.

Mario Circuit 3 (SNES) - If you have a speed boost (mushroom, star etc.) near the end of this track there is a chicane leading into the final corner. As you approach it look straight ahead and boost; across the sand and through the gap in the multi-colored brick wall.

Peach Gardens (DS) - There are two jump ramps here. One on the left, one on the right, as you enter the final chicane. If you have a mushroom take full advantage of these!

Online Play

Come And Have A Go If You Think You're Hard Enough!

There are two types of online play; race and battle. You start with a ranking of 5000 points online and this is affected by how well you do. You recieve more points for success and get deducted points for failure.

Online you also play for the team, as well as individually. If you are the star performer on a losing team, you could still lose points even if you were the best player in the game. If you are the best player on a winning side you are going to get a lot of points. It's pure luck which type of players you get teamed up with but if you're a pro-player like myself, be prepared to carry the team on your back!

Race

In race mode you compete against another 11 people in a 3 lap race around a course. You can only vote for courses you have unlocked but you also have the option of a randomly selected course. It is ranked and your rank will either increase or decrease depending on the position you finish.

Battle

Battle mode alternates between two battle types; coin runners and balloon battle.

In a coin runner battle the objective is to collect coins. You can hit other vehicles with your weapons to make them drop coins but if you get hit yourself, you will lose coins too! The team with the highest coin tally at the end wins!

In balloon battle, you score points by popping opposition players balloons. Hit them with a weapon to pop a balloon. If you lose all three of your balloons you lose a point.

The Challenge

If you think you're good enough...Feel free to add me online. My friend code is 4940-5570-8676.

I'll see you around!

Mario Kart Channel

The Mario Kart Channel is a channel that can be downloaded for easy access from your Wii home screen. It provides easy access to your online activities by allowing you to compete in competitions, show your friend roster, download ghost data and see how you rank against everybody else without having to start up Mario Kart Wii in your console.

Note: You will have to start Mario Kart Wii to use some of the Mario Kart Channel's features.
