Mark Wahlberg Trains Like a Champion for the The Fighter
As I waiting to get my hair done the other day, I saw a glimpse of Mark Wahlberg on the cover of People magazine. But, what made do a double take was the fact that this Mark Wahlberg had a bigger belly. Since Marky Mark is my favorite actor of all time for his acting skills and his hot bod, I proceeded to open the magazine to find out more about why he gained weight. At this point, I am feeling a little shocked because he has always been into fitness and I'm so used to seeing him in his Calvin Klein Ads. The article then said that Mark gained weight for his role in his new film, "The Fighter." The Fighter is a movie about the life of "Irish" Micky Ward, a professional boxer who won 9 straight fights after coming back from a 3-year break. The out-of-shape version of Marky Mark was for portratrying Micky Ward before he got back into the ring.
The Fighter movie which is set to be released in November 2010 and directed by David O. Russell also portrays Ward's relationship with his half-brother and also professional boxer, Dickie Eklund. Eklund is played by Christian Bale but was originally reported to be played by Brad Pitt. I think the Wahlberg-Pitt combination would have been great but I'm just glad that they didn't replace Wahlberg.

A Little Background on Mark Wahlberg
Wahlberg's claim to fame started when he debuted as a rapper for the band Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch when he was 20 years old. Hence the nickname, Marky Mark. While I was doing my research for this article, I came across a video of the band's most popular song called, "Good Vibrations." At first, the title didn't ring a bell for me but as soon as I heard the chorus, I finally recognized it.
Most of Wahlberg's music videos showed off his amazing physique which eventually lead him to land a modeling job at Calvin Klein (CK). His ads were so successful that in 1992, the Calvin Klein billboards at Times Square in New York featured Mark exclusively. You can also see him posing with Kate Moss in some of his CK posters.
Wahlberg's Movies and Other Achievements
Wahlberg has also tried his hand on producing and did it rather successfully. He is the executive producer for the popular HBO series, "Entourage", which is loosely based on his experiences in Hollywood during his early years as an actor. He is played by Adrian Grenier as Vincent Chase in these series.
During his early years in the Marky Mark and The Funky Bunch Band, Wahlberg also created a fitness workout video entitled, "The Marky Mark Workout: Form... Focus... Fitness."
He currently live in Beverly Hills, California and married supermodel Rhea Durham in 2009 even though they have been together since 2001 and have 4 kids together.

Wahlberg's Training for The Fighter
After gaining some fat to look the part of the semi-retired "Irish" Micky Ward, Wahlberg eventually had to get back in shape for Ward's 2nd debut into the professional boxing arena. Not only did he have to look the part of the champion, he also had to really know how to fight like a boxer. Fortunately, Wahlberg already does boxing as a regular part of his fitness routine even before he started training for this role. When asked about his training, he said that he trains 2 hours a day every morning for over 2 years now and still continues to train while they are shooting the movie. Some actors may think that just looking the part is enough but with Micky Ward being Wahlberg's favorite fighter of all time and a fellow Massachussetts native, he trains diligently to actually learn how to fight professionally and studies Ward's moves and his left hook trademark shot carefully. Mark and Bale were also spotted at Freddie Roach's Hollywood gym, "The Wild Card Boxing Club," to learn a few moves from Manny Pacquiao's coach.

Of course, the learning would not be complete and Walhberg and Bale did not learn from the brothers they are portraying. In this video, they train with Dick and Mick to learn directly from their real-life counterparts.

Marky Mark's Detailed Training Routine
Wahlberg does all his training at his home gym in Beverly Hills which he mainly built to train for The Fighter. His gym will put our local big gyms to shame since it has a basketball court, a boxing ring, punching bags, a massage table, cardio machines, and enough weights to train an entire football team. When he's done training for boxing, he then hits the weights for about 30 to 40 minutes using supersets without any rest periods while wearing a 35-pound weighted vest. In his Men's Health interview he reveals the muscle groups that he trains on each day of the week as follows: Monday is legs, biceps, and back. Tuesday is chest, shoulders, triceps. Wednesday is legs and biceps again. He'll rest 2 days and start again on Saturday. For warming up, Mark jumps rope. He also performs some exercises on the Power Plate before his workouts. The Power Plate is a machine with a vibrating platform where you can do a variety of exercise on. The whole body vibration technology is supposed to help activate more muscle fibers compared to doing exercises without it. Many other celebrities and athletes such as Lance Armstrong, Clint Eastwood, Hilary Swank, Madonna, U2, and Chicago Bulls to name a few reportedly used this plate to get and keep in tip-top condition.
