Marketing For Architects.
Architects are in a difficult climate currently, with the construction sector being in recession this spills down to many architectural practices.
Normally very busy many are looking at ways to generate new enquiries due to many projects being put on hold (due to clients delaying for payment issues). Most architects (historically) work via recommendation by being passed recommendations from builders, construction companies and other architects that they are involved with in their network.
Many architects use a variety of marketing services to advertise and market their practices.
Website
More or less all architects have websites in place (unless they are brand new and just starting up) to showcase their projects and portfolio of work that they carry out. Most would use website designers to help produce a website for them (mostly this would be brochure style websites or CMS websites) however some of the top London based architectural practices would employ full time designers as their websites would be updated regularly with changing projects and news information.
Internet Marketing
Many architects recognise that they need to use web companies to offer SEO Advice and PPC work. There are thousands of architects around the UK so many know that having a strong internet position is important for them to stand out in the crowd.
PR
Many architects use PR agencies to help them with brand awareness and provide media exposure. There are numerous architectural publications so PR companies can get media coverage if very focused magazines.
Graphics
Many architects will use graphic designers to help with branding, corporate ID and company stationery. Some architects will have in house designers but the mass majority will use external design agencies.
Exhibitions
Many architects use events and exhibitions to showcase their practices; there are a number of architect aimed events throughout the UK and exhibition stand designers do help many architects with preparing stands and exhibiting at events. The event industry (as well as the construction industry) has also seen a down turn as more people use the internet rather than events to communicate - but still a strong marketing arm.
Advertising
Architects do not tend to advertise (in the traditional sense such as TV advertising, radio etc.) as they are focused on the business sector as opposed to the consumer market; however many architectural practices will use advertising agencies to draw together advertising campaigns of over sorts (B2B campaigns) they can use to stand out with.
New architectural practices are starting each week as people leave university or decide to go it alone; so the industry is getting larger and larger - hence the need for architects to adopt more aggressive marketing techniques.

Architecture Experience.
Does a knowledge of the way the architectural industry really help in marketing.Very likely it does.
The architectural industry is unique, it has its own way of working, its own jargon. It is quite tight knit and it is a case of who you know.
Knowing how the market works is at the center of being able to communicate a message within it; and as marketing is all about communication - knowledge is power.
There are many marketing companies around the UK that have a strong background and track record in the architectural industry; so it is strongly advised for businesses within the sector to work with an industry experienced agency.
Many marketing agencies will say that they do have experience when they do not; the best way of finding the right marketing company to work with is to meet with them. This way you can chat through the campaign and quiz them as to their level of knowledge of the architectural market.
Another thing that may be helpful, is to chat to some of the marketing companies current clients (that are involved in the industry) in order to see how their campaigns are going and assess how fruitful it would be in working with them.
Certainly considering avenues of marketing such as PR knowing your way around the industry is important; knowing the right media channels and having established contacts plays a big roll in getting quick results.
