How To Make More Money From Your Writing No Matter What You Write

If you want to make money writing, or you want to make more money from your writing, then you need to market.

I know. It's a pain. It's ironic that I spend so much time writing about marketing when most of the time I don't want to do it. I had rather be writing.

However, all of that hard work you've put into your writing really isn't worth much if no one reads it.

The sad fact is, the average writer only makes between $1,500 to $4,000 per year. Pretty dismal results.

The secret is to market more. If you've read some of the current crop of best sellers, then you know it isn't always the best, or most talented writers who get read. (Think Dan Brown).

It's the writers that people know.

I tend to read the same writers over and over especially if I love their books. I'll buy a book based strictly on the name. That doesn't mean every book the writer writes is a winner, or I enjoyed reading it. I bought it because it was a favorite writer.

As a writer, you have an advantage over everyone else marketing on the internet. You're already a writer, and you love to write.

Now writing ads, articles, and other types of promotional writing may not sound like a good time to you, but it can make you a lot of money.

Here are some tips for using writing to promote your writing:

1. Advertise. You can use free sites like US Free Ads and Adpost to advertise your books, writing, or writing services. Searchers visit these sites to buy. You can reach them by advertising.

2. Write articles for promotion. There are some writers online who think that writing articles for promotion is tantamount to giving your work away. I disagree. You can make thousands of dollars from one article just by getting your name out there. The more articles you write to promote yourself, the more money you can make. These articles are viral in nature, which means they'll get passed around if they're good. This means greater exposure for you and your work.

3. Write articles to make money. You can write for print magazines, as well as trade magazines. Some will pay you and some won't. Either way, it's added exposure for your writing and gets your name out there.

Here are two sites where you can sell your work:

Constant Content

4. Write press releases. Press releases are one of the most effective ways to promote your writing because it's considered news. You'll get a lot of credibility, as well as a lot of visibility from using press releases.

5. Build a website. Having a presence on the internet gives you more credibility. Tools like Instant Site Creator, available for free through My Free Giveaway, can help you build a really nice website without knowing HTML.

5. Optimize your site for the search engines. Tools like Web CEO make it very easy for you to optimize your website. If you can read and follow directions, you can optimize your website.

Don't forget to include your name in your keywords, especially if you have an unusual name. Once you get something of a following, people will search for you by name.

6. Write a blog. Blogging is not only a great public relations tool, it's also a great way to build your brand and connect with readers. Use it to announce your latest projects, talk about writing, and help your readers.

Patrice-Anne Rutledge offers a blog called The Web Savvy Writer. This is an excellent example of a writer using a blog to build brand and share information.

7. Build a list. You can use an autoresponder to build a list for your website. This way you can recycle your traffic and build a relationship with your readers. It's also a great way to communicate with readers who want to use email instead of RSS.

8. Build a Squidoo Lens. Don't be afraid to brag. Tell others who you are. Remember, it isn't the ones who write the best, or are the most talented. It's the ones who market.

Here's my Squidoo Lens about me: Jinger Jarrett.

Making money online as a writer is easier than ever. You just need to build an effective web presence and get your name out there.

Keep putting your name out there and build a relationship with your readers. You'll get traffic and sales, and you can live the life most writers only dream of.
