Marketing Me - Positive Career Encouragement and Coaching

What is Marketing Me?

Marketing Me is the new way to search for opportunities, jobs, sales, leads, projects, contracts and openings in your professional life.

Self promotion and self marketing are the only ways to find a new job or other self funding opportunity.

Everyday, companies and organizations search for the right people. They crave experts, specialists and superstars. Why not make yourself a target for the right opportunity search?

The old way of want ads, job fairs, cold calling, and spamming your resume leads no where fast.

Instead, grow a network, write a blog, start a mailing list, build a website and market yourself to the global community!

First, read my blog

Next, get the right tools for the job!

Start your own self marketing and promotion campaign today!
  1. Get a website - not for your company, but for the brand called you. Websites are inexpensive and easy to build. Domain names are inexpensive too. Check with GoDaddy
or one of the other registrars for names and hosting options.
I have multiple web sites, one which markets me, another which facilitates my sales work, another for my own business, and so on.
  2. Also, get a blog like Typepad- not the same as a website but rather a fluid online journal of your actions and accomplishments. A blog is as mandatory as a business card and working phone number. Use your blog to promote your website and vice versa.GoDaddy includes a blog option with your domain and webhosting purchase. Check it out.
  3. Use LinkedIn - download a copy. Fill out the profile and get your personal URL. Now tell everyone you are on LinkedIn. Get lots of invites to join their network. Grow your name.
Make sure your contact information is accessible to persons not in your network.
  4. Get Plaxo - It integrates with Outlook to manage your addresses. But it does one more thing. It sends email updates every time your contact information changes. Think about it. Free e-commercials to everyone in your address book every time your title or phone number changes. And its free. Unbelievable.
  5. Start a mailing list and newsletter - I use AWeber
Mailing lists and newsletters go hand in hand. Setup an email list of your business contacts. Once a month or week send out a newsletter. Make the newsletter look as professional as possible. Most of the tools are free, so why not use them? Make yourself an expert and stay on the radar.
  6. Build a lens on Squidoo

Finally, self fund your life

Ask any startup, unless you want to lose control of your dreams, self funding is the way to go. Work for someone else today but make self funding a priority part of your life and career plan!
  1. Consult. Offer your expert services to companies in your fields of interest for a fixed time period or in an ongoing role.
  2. Contract. Complete fixed project work for others who do not need a full time employee or partner.
  3. Speak. Speak at conferences, trade shows, meetings, offsites, even online using podcasting.
  4. Write. Write articles and ebooks about your expert subjects. Web sites, indivduals and companies pay for reports, articles and books.
  5. Market. Market your own products or someone else's you believe in. The power of marketing on the Internet is huge.

Improve your personal traffic

Marketing Me - Chapter 9

Ask anyone who has a website or blog, traffic is king.

Traffic basically determines how much your site is worth. High traffic sites have high advertising revenue potential, for instance.

You have tremendous value as well. You only need to increase the traffic to you.

Start by self marketing yourself. Join one of the dozens of social, business and marketing networks available. Build a website. Create a blog and write regularly. Contribute to online forums in your field. Offer to speak or assist at industry gatherings. Write for publications.

Make yourself known and increase your personal traffic. The opportunities will follow.

Make me better!

Feedback makes us stronger and better. Please advise me how this lens can be better. What did you like? What do you disagree with?

Out of work? Laid off? Fired? Ready to change jobs or careers?

What to do right now!

  1. Contact your network and let them know you are ready for change. Never send a "poor me" email.
  2. Update your resume. Don't do it alone! Find a literate friend, a muse, who can help you best present and promote you.
  3. Find a coach, mentor. Someone who will talk you through the ups and downs of your job search.
  4. Get prepared. A website. Multiple email addresses. A contact list. A blog. Clothes for interviews. The right phone. Resume both in paper and electronic format. Thank you cards. Business cards.
