Maroon 5 | History

Maroon 5 are a pop/rock quintet that got their start in Hollywood, California. Most people are unaware that the band was originally called Kara's Flowers and were having solid success with a single that was starting to crossover from college radio to alternative stations. "Soap Disco", was gaining a buzz, thanks in part, to the new sounds coming from No Doubt, Goldfinger, Everclear and Harvey Danger. Kara's Flowers were definitely in the mix, at this time, playing on several tours with those artists, in support of their debut release, "The Fourth World"

After "Soap Disco" ran its course, the album fizzled and the contract eventually ran out with Reprise Records. Left without a record deal, the band, showing true moxy, went into the recording studio and put together a batch of songs, intent on releasing them on their own. These songs were never properly released and are now available at some random site on the internet.

Changing like a chameleon, the band ditched their old name, resurrected as Maroon 5 and evolved their overall sound and look.

Maroon 5 quietly signed a record deal with Clive Davis' J Records and set forth on their debut release, "Songs About Jane". This album snuck up on North America (and the rest of the planet, for that matter) with a whopping 5 singles that charted well. This album has a lot of spunk and featured the singles, "This Love", "Harder To Breathe" and "She Will Be Loved".

Adam Levine and the boys set off on a lengthy run of tour stops that saw their overall crowd attendance evolve and grow from small clubs to large theaters. This album achieved multi-platinum status and won two Grammy Awards for Best New Artist and Best Performance By A Duo Or Group. The band had arrived to the party, at this point and continues to create interesting music and play to sold out arenas.

After touring for several years and riding the phenomenon of their debut album, Maroon 5 went back into the studio and emerged with "It Won't Be Soon Before Long", their second release. Just in time for the summer touring season, 2007 was a banner year for the boys. The album debuted #1 with over 430,000 copies sold in the first week.

The band chose to focus primarily on reality television shows and live performances on such staples as Jay Leno, David Letterman and Saturday Night Live. There were another 5 charting singles from this record - "Makes Me Wonder", "Wake Up Call", "Won't Go Home Without You", "If I Never See Your Face Again" and "Goodnight Goodnight."

After the touring and critical success of the second album, the band decided to take some time off to recharge their batteries and come up with fresh ideas for their third album. Adam Levine, in a stroke of genius, agreed to participate as a "Coach/Judge" on the first season of a new reality show, The Voice. This show was being compared to American Idol, but the difference in the show was the completely unique format of having the coaches sit in their chairs with their backs to the singers. By taking away the visual element, the first round of contestants are picked solely based on their stage performance and whether the judge can hear something special in their voice.

Adam Levine proved to be a pleasant surprise of wit and humor, while showcasing his multi-instrumentalist skillset. The timing, as always, was impeccable, as the first single, "Moves Like Jagger", just happened to be a duet with another coach, Christina Aguilera. Maroon 5 performed the single on live television to a very large audience and won themselves a whole demographic of new fans, in the process.

The album is currently selling at a brisk pace and is expected to have several singles on airwaves and television throughout the 2011-2012 campaign.
