Maroon 5 - General Background 

• Maroon 5, comprising Adam Levine (lead vocals, guitar), James Valentine (guitar, backing vocals), Jesse Carmichael (keyboards, backing vocals), Mickey Madden (bass guitar) and Matt Flynn (drums). Their debut album, Songs About Jane, inspired by Adam's ex-girlfriend Jane, spawned hits like "Harder to Breathe", "She Will Be Loved", "This Love", "Sunday Morning", "Must Get Out" after a slow start.
• Adam Levine ~ born March 18, 1979 to Patsy Noah and Fred Levine in Los Angeles, California. Has one brother, Michael, a stepsister, Julia, and two half-siblings, Sam and Liza, from his father's remarriage to Lisa. Fred and Lisa Levine own two men's fashion stores. Adam attended the private Brentwood School where he met the original members of Kara's Flowers, Jesse Carmichael, Mickey Madden and Ryan Dusick.
• James Valentine ~ born October 5, 1978, in Lincoln, Nebraska. Has three sisters and one brother. Family now lives in Utah and both parents work for Brigham Young University, owned and operated by the Latter-day Saints Church. Long-time friend of John Mayer and an opening slot in one of Mayer's tours helped bring extensive exposure to Maroon 5. James was also the only member of the band to live in the haunted mansion where their second album "It Won't Be Soon Before Long" was written and recorded and encountered what he describes as "a benevolent spirit" in the house.
• Jesse Carmichael ~ born in Boulder, Colorado on April 2, 1979. Formed Kara's Flowers with friends Adam, Mickey and Ryan in 1994. After the demise of the group, Jesse and Adam attended Five Towns College in Long Island, New York where they were exposed to a completely different music scene. Eventually, the two friends dropped out of Five Towns College and reunited with Mickey and Ryan, added guitarist James in 1999 and Maroon 5 was born.
• Michael "Mickey" Madden ~ born May 13, 1979 in Austin, Texas. Along with Adam and Jesse, Mickey played in garages with the bands Pearl Jam and Nirvana being among their influences. After the break-up of Kara's Flowers, Mickey attended UCLA and rejoined Adam, Jesse and Ryan to form Maroon 5, with the addition of James.
• Matt Flynn ~ born March 12, 1970 in Palo Alto, California and was orginally the substitute drummer for the band, eventually becoming an official member of the team when Ryan Dusick left the band due to wrist and shoulder injuries. Matt is previously the drummer for The B-52s and Gavin DeGraw. Matt and his wife welcomed their second child, Michael Ford Flynn, on June 5, 2007.
