Unless We All Have Equality, None Of Us Have Equality

The funny thing about equality is that it's an all-or-nothing state of being. Either we all have equality, or none of us do. I'm a heterosexual American, so I have the privilege of being married in a union recognized by the state, with all the benefits that come with that arrangement. But do I live in equality? No, because among my neighbors are same-sex couples that live together, and have children together, but are not allowed to get married.

The Constitution requires that all Americans be treated as equals under the law. There is no loophole exempting unpopular groups from equality. Opponents of marriage equality ask us to ignore the Constitution in the name of what they call "tradition". What tradition, however, is more fundamentally American than the tradition of constitutional democracy?
