The Possible Future of Generating Energy

"There is enough energy in high altitude winds to power civilization 100 times over; and sooner or later, we're going to learn to tap into the power of winds and use it to run civilization."

That are the words of Ken Caldeira, Professor of Global Ecology at the Carnegie Institution for Science. The MARS turbine is a good concept, that has not yet been put into mass production. But It has potential and who knows, maybe we will some day get our electricity entirely through wind power with the help of the MARS turbine.

How Does It Work?

MARS turbine

The Magenn Air Rotor System, or for short M.A.R.S., is a wind turbine that is supposed to be without a tower. It floats in the air, like a giant blimp.

The only thing, connecting it to the ground, is a 1000 feet long tether. The whole turbine rotates in a horizontal axis according to the direction of the wind. The whole turbine is designed to catch the constant high altitude wind. In other words, it basically works like a weather vane with a windmill attached to it.

A MARS turbine is of course designed more aerodynamically. Its rotation creates the Magnus effect which provides more lift to the turbine.

I won't go into detail what the Magnus effect is, just know that it's the same thing responsible for a curved ball in many sports. So next time your favourite sports team loses cause of a ball that moved like it normally shouldn't, you know why.

This turbine was originally designed for locations where setting up a traditional wind farm isn't possible: places with a harsh climate like an AntarcĀtic research station or disaster areas that need quick access to power for emergency and medical equipment. No one ever thought to compare it to an original wind turbine. But they should, because it can compete with other designs any time.

High altitude winds are stronger than the kind you experience on the ground. But most important is the fact that high altitude winds are constant, which means this turbine will rotate and produce energy without any interruptions.

Why is the Mars Turbine Better?

MARS turbineWell, first, it has no placement limitations. Coast-line or off-shore locations are not necessary to capture higher speed winds. Reaching winds at 1,000-feet above ground level allow the MARS turbine to be installed closer to the grid.

This turbine is mobile and can be deployed, deflated, and redeployed without the need for towers or heavy cranes. You just put it on a pick up truck, drive it to the desired place, fill it up and that's it.

And another good news. It's bird and bat friendly. If a bird crashes with a MARS turbine, the only thing it will experience is a mild headache. And that's the worst case. If a bird crashes into a conventional turbine, there won't be a happy ending.

We all know a conventional turbine is noisy. This solution however, is not. It has much lower noise emissions than a normal wind turbine. It also is higher, that means you won't even hear the little noise it is making. What happens if the cable breaks? The turbine will fly away and float for a while until it finally lands somewhere, hopefully not on a highway.

Good lens. I'd love to see this MARS turbine actually go somewhere beside trials. To date, though, getting more than a token amount of electricity from it has been a challenge. This is primarily due to the weight of the materials involved. Hopefully, they will over come it and the cost of production will be reasonable.
