Marta Kunaver and her artistic expression

Marta Kunaver was born in 1940 in Ljubljana, Slovenia (EU). An architect graduate left her home in 1963 to work in Algeria and her Yugoslavian culture colided with the Arabic cultural expressions, after which she moved to Dakar, Senegal only to expand her cultural views with the African tradition and modernism. Marta's profile consists mostly of watercolour and oil works on wood and glass paintings

After several twists in her artistic styles, Marta has found herself yet again attracted to the inner spirit of women, to their beautifully structured body and the general female strength.

The painting on here is a reflection of the multiple personalities inside each person alive, there's the devilish part calmed by our angelic side, there's a peaceful "me" and the sunrays inside our hearts. Marta's specialty is the combination of colours, from calm and earthly, to the likes of these - strong effective colours working beautifully on white walls.

The Dove

The Dove and Lady in RedBecause of Marta Kunaver's university degree in arhitecture and numerous projects (buildings, hotels, homes) in her country and also in Algeria and Senegal, her sense of definition, technical details and incredible touch of dimensions, measures and relations come to life on each and every painting she delivers. In the recent years, her works have become more and more specific, she is also able to deliver paintings only on the basis of your colour desires.

This painting has been done for her daughter-in-law just on the basis of the fact that the daughter-in-law's favourite colours are red, white and black. The painting represents the bird of peace and happiness, an innocent white dove gently in the hands of a spiritual woman. If she holds the dove gently, it will forever linger with her, but if the woman grabs too tightly, the dove will dissappear as soon as the woman lets go for a second.

Marta's life motto is "live and let live", which is obvious also from this painting - the freedom of choice is yours if you want it, just don't be violent over it.

The Soul

The SoulA classical female theme intertwined with the ocean in the background and flowers in the front... Marta Kunaver has a typical style of painting a woman, a mixture of Arabic and African with classical European style. These styles have improved with time and number of paintings, so the shapes now are clearer, sharper yet soft, representing the softness of a woman together with her strength.

They say that an artist has to fight and live through some tough times to become a real artist, to put the pain on the paper, and Marta's life hasn't been all flowers, milk and honey. In 1980 she lost her partner to cancer only few days after having a second child. Single mother of two sons, Marta Kunaver never gave up - she provided for herself and her two schooling sons, and even nowadays after officially retiring from profession, she's still an active architect, rebuilding and building homes for the most demanding audience.

This picture was painted for Marta's younger son, representing his and her strength with grace.

The Wedding

This painting was created in the summer of 2011, inspired by a most beautiful wedding. It was created as a wedding gift, representing all the good wishes for the newly-weds:

- there's the modern man, remaining himself throughout the marriage, but still true, loyal and gentle to his wife,

- there's the beautiful young bride, in love, accepting the greatest gift of all - peace and hapiness,

- the buildings representing a warm and cosy home for the family,

- the sun, the pillar of our existence.
