Martha Stewart Cotton Hemp Yarn: Reviews and Where to Buy Online

A Review of Martha Stewart Yarn

Martha Stewart Cotton Hemp Yarn is made by Lion Brand Yarn and comes in 14 different colors. It is a medium worsted weight yarn with each skein yielding 1.75 ounces [66 yards]. Although Lion Brand is an American company this particular yarn is made in China.

Fiber composition is 65% cotton and 35% hemp. The label states it works up on a Crochet I hook at 12 single crochets and 14 rows but do check your gauge before starting a project. [4" x 4"] If you are a knitter you'll need size 8 needles to make a 4" by 4" square. [18st x 24 rows]

I've worked with both cotton and hemp before and the mixture of these two plant based fibers makes for a yarn that is not as thick as your kitchen cotton and not as rough as 100% hemp. The price ranges between $4.99 - $5.49 depending on where you buy it and what sales you find.

The colors are not deep but rather pastel and even the Sour Cherry has a dull or matte finish so please be aware of this when ordering online. If you are unsure of how much yarn to purchase always buy more than you think you will need. In my opinion 1 ball of Martha's cotton hemp yarn will yield a small dish cloth or an infant hat.

Kniffty Knitter Loom

A Comparison to the Martha Stewart Crafts Knit & Weave Loom

Martha Stewarts' Knit and Weave Loom
I just saw a little weaved washcloth sample at the local craft store. I really liked how it turned out it was made using Martha's Lemon Drop Cotton Hemp Yarn. I've not used this particular loom but the idea of having a set of looms that you can alter depending on the project intrigues me. When looking at the display I was overwhelmed with all the little pegs. I know I would lose one or twenty pieces or worse step on them.

I think for ease of use the kniffty knitter is a good choice but if you've been loom knitting for a while this might be a great investment. I've found the price of this knit and weave loom averages $40 but I've also seen it as high as $60.

Unlike the kniffty knitter this set has separate frames which you interlock to make the shape you need. You then proceed to stick the pegs into the holes and when I tried this with the display for the most part it was pretty easy. I did find a few didn't fit as snug yet others were so snug they were difficult to push into their slots - Not something I would be happy dealing with on a regular basis.

The Knit and Weave kit comes with instructions for a hat, a scarf and a blanket. If you go on the Lion Brand site you'll find a series of videos tutorials that will instruct you in various stitches, how to use it to weave and how to make a rosette.

Kniffty Knitter Loom Set
Having owned a set of Kniffty Knitter Looms I can say these are great for beginners and advanced alike. I've seen people who struggle with crochet use a loom with ease.

They are made of sturdy plastic and even children find they can make a hat in less than a day. Each set comes with a 5" small loom, a 7" medium loom, a 9" large loom and a 11" extra large loom. These looms do use bulky weight yarn or just double up on your yarn because if you don't you'll end up with a very loose knit stitch.

It includes a hook to pick up stitches and instructions however the instructions only cover making a hat. You can make flat and round fabric with these looms but you'll have to do some research online via groups, youtube, or loom company sites to locate patterns and detailed instructions.

Martha Stewart Brand Yarns You Will Love

Mambo, Roving, Merino, Glitter Eyelash, Lofty wool blend, extra soft wool blend, alpaca blend

Martha Stewart Crafts offers a variety of yarns in a number of colors. I've worked with both Mambo and Cotton Hemp.

I don't see much value in the Mambo yarn as the most you can do with one skein is make a bracelet or necklace. I finger crocheted a necklace but at $4.99+ a skein it won't be something I purchase again. Plus the roving is acrylic so there is no give in finger crochet. It would have been better to use a large crochet hook like an N or even an S. It might be good for faux dread hats or other kookie craft projects.

At first the Cotton Hemp didn't seem like a good purchase because the skeins are so small and at nearly $5.00 a skein you'd have to invest nearly $60 or more for an afghan. As I worked with it though I liked how it didn't split as easily as kitchen cotton.

This yarn is not as stretchy as regular cotton so I think it works well for washcloths, dishcloths and even makeup removers. I ended up making a puff flower scarf and an amigurumi owl with the skein which I was satisfied with. The gauge is true to package details for crochet.

The glittery yarn is very similar to Christmas tinsel and would be better for craft projects or even for wrapping gifts.

Sugar n Cream Cotton Yarn for Crochet

Would You Crochet With Sugar n Cream Cotton or Martha Stewart Cotton Hemp?

When comparing Sugar n Cream cotton with Martha Stewart's Cotton Hemp I think I would use MS Cotton Hemp for projects like hats or tops or other projects that need less stretch. MS cotton hemp does have some stretch but let's say you're adding a bodice to a dress - I think that this yarn would be perfect because the hemp makes the fabric more firm but not stiff. Sugar n Cream would be stretchy and get stretchier with use.

I would crochet with both brands for bath and kitchen projects as they both work up well. I haven't used MS Cotton Hemp long term so don't know how it stands up to repeated use and washings. From the ply of the hemp and the cotton I have a feeling that it might fray upon repeated washings but only time will truly tell.

Sugar n Cream has a larger variety of colors than MS cotton hemp but if you're looking for a more subdued look or even if you're crocheting for baby, Ms Cotton hemp's palette of blue icing and pink taffy will work nicely. I actually like Martha's yarn solely on the creativity of the yarn names.

Save 52% on Sugar n Cream Cotton Yarn

I've always used Sugar n Cream cotton for dish cloths and hats as it is 100% cotton. One of the difficulties with this yarn is the tendency of it to split. I wouldn't recommend this yarn to those learning to crochet. For bath and kitchen though this yarn is great.

In 2010 I read a crochet bloggers story of how he inherited a bunch of crochet cotton from his mother-in-law when she passed. He used this yarn to make his grandchild a blanket. I thought the story was lovely because the yarn was from the great grandmother but the work was done by her grandfather. It was like a message of love from the living and the afterlife. To read more about this project you can read his blog at CrochetDad Ramblings.

If you visit the lily sugar n cream website you'll find a library of patterns as well as a gauge calculator for both knitting and crochet. Just enter the number of stitches per 4" and the hook size. You can also estimate the yardage you'll need for your project with their calculator.

Loom Knitting Projects

Yarn Loom Patterns for Your Knit and Weave Loom Kit

I remember a few years ago when I finally learned how to do cable stitches - it was a joyous day. No, that isn't an exaggeration. I was really excited to have learned this technique.

I purchased a pattern from CrochetDad.etsy.com and after hours of frogging my work [aka ripping out the work and reworking it] I finally understood how to make a cable. Yipee!

Reviewing knitting looms and these patterns books for this article makes me wish I still had my set of kniffy knitters. [I did see them on sale for less than $15] Maybe one day I'll buy another set but this year my fiber goal is knitting a pair of socks.

Back to cables - This book is for loom knitters who are past the basics. You already know how to use your loom and want to be challenged.

Learn how to:

  • chain cast on

  • knit

  • purl

  • garter stitch

  • stockinette stitch

  • twisted knit stitch [single stitch]

  • increase

  • decrease

  • cast off

  • cables over 2 stitches

  • wrap and turn short rows

  • cables over 3 stitches

  • cables over 4 stitches

Use these stitches to make projects like a cabled scarf, cabled socks, Cable purse, hat, sweater, fingerless gloves and a cozy afghan.

Loom Knitting Book

Patterns for the Knitting Loom

Once you get beyond the basics of loom knitting you'll want to try out other stitches and projects. Try a long loom for flat pieces or a rosette loom in your next project.

Did you know you can make cables on a loom? I didn't and the projects are challenging enough for the advanced loom knitter. Projects you might try are the cable mittens or even a cable hat.

This year I'm learning how to knit a pair of socks but I wonder if making socks on a loom would be easier for me?

Be sure to try adding color to work [intarsia] for a more creative piece.

There are so many things to make with a loom like scarves, socks, blankets, cowls, mittens, and of course hats. What will you make?
